Charmerande opretentiös comeback från nittiotalshjältar

Information Societys självtitulerade andra album från 1988, med hits som “What’s On Your Mind” och “Running”, var ett av mina absoluta favoritalbum när det begav sig. Det Minneapolis-baserade synthpopbandet var ständigt en av representanterna på mina kassettband i sällskap med andra tidiga amerikanska band i genren som Red Flag, Cosmicity, The Echoing Green, Cause & Effect och Faith Assembly för att nämna några.

Information Society släppte fem album fram till 1997 och gjorde sedan comeback med nytt material via “Synthesizer” tio år senare. Bandet består nu åter av originaltrion Paul Robb, James Cassidy och sångaren Kurt Larson (tidigare Harland) som har tagit tillbaka mikrofonen efter Christopher Antons inhopp mellan 2006 och 2009.

Det nya albumet “_Hello world” är således bandets första studiomaterial på sju år och det som imponerar (på gott och ont) är hur lite som egentligen har förändrats sedan det begav sig. Information Society besitter nämligen fortfarande alldeles säregna förmågor.

Inledningen med “Land of the Blind” och det tredje spåret “Where Were You” förflyttar mig snabbt till slutet av åttiotalet igen och jag konstaterar att bandet fortfarande kan producera starka poplåtar.

“Beautiful World” med sina chiptune inslag (och ett gästspel av Devo-bekantingen Gerald V. Casale) visar tydligt på bandets brittiska influenser medan “Creatures of Light and Darkness” med sina moderna rytmer påminner oss om att det faktiskt är 2014 och att även Information Society följer trenden av modern elektronisk dansmusik även om de bortom de moderna rytmerna tappert försöker leverera en vacker och åttiotalsdoftande dansant poplåt.

“Above and Below” är kanske annars tillsammans med den dansanta “Get Below” och den melankoliska “Let it Burn” det mest originaltrogna spåret på albumet: Ett drömskt stråkarrangemang, en rullande melodislinga, några diskreta gitarrpålägg, ett taktfast beat och en väldigt typisk Information Society-refräng. “Dancing With Strangers” är i sin tur originell på bara ett sätt som Information Society kan få till det.

Albumet rycker och sliter både hit och dit och precis som tidigare när det kommer till Information Society så vet man aldrig riktigt vad man har att förvänta sig. Överraskningsmomenten är många men det hör också till bandets charm. Information Society har sällan haft någon pretentiös tanke eller arbetat efter något speciellt tema och de verkar ha en synnerligen avslappnad relation till sitt låtskrivande.

Så även på “_Hello World”.

Charming and unpretentious comeback from nineties-heroes

Information Society‘s self-titled second album from 1988, with hits like “What’s On Your Mind” and “Running”, was one of my absolute favorite albums at the time. The Minneapolis-based synthpop band was constantly one of the representatives of my cassette tapes in the company of other early American bands of the genre like Red Flag, Cosmicity, The Echoing Green, Cause & Effect and Faith Assembly to name a few.

Information Society released five albums until 1997 and then made a comeback with “Synthesizer” ten years later (2007). The band now again consists of the original trio with Paul Robb, James Cassidy and the singer Kurt Larson (former Harland) who has taken back the microphone after Christopher Anton joined in between 2006 and 2009.

The new album “_Hello world” is the band’s first studio material in seven years and what impresses (for better or worse) is how little has actually changed since back in the days. Information Society still possess peculiar abilities.

The beginning with “Land of the Blind” and the third track “Where Were You” moves me quickly to the end of the eighties again and I note that the band still possesses great skills to write strong pop songs.

“Beautiful World” with its chiptune elements (and a guest-appearance by Devo’s Gerald V. Casale) clearly demonstrates the band’s British influences while “Creatures of Light and Darkness” with its modern rhythms remind us that it is actually 2014, and that Information Society follows the trend of electronic dance music just like everyone else, even though they – beyond the modern rhythms – valiantly tries to deliver a beautiful and eightiesfregrant dance-pop song.

“Above and Below” together with the highly danceable “Get Below” and the melancholic “Let it Burn” the most fidelity track on the album: A dreamy string arrangement, a rolling melody, some subtle guitar toppings, a rhythmic beat and a very typical Information Society chorus. “Dancing with Strangers” is, in turn, original in just such a way that the Information Society can get to it.

The album pulls and tears both here and there, and just as before when it comes to Information Society, you never know quite what to expect. The moments of surprises are many but it also belongs to the band’s charm. Information Society has rarely had a pretentious thought or worked it all up to some special theme and they seem to have a very relaxed relationship with their songwriting.

The same goes for “_Hello World”.
