Tre års mognad gör hela skillnaden.
Först – vilken cover dom har snickrat ihop av denna monsterhit från ’91! Musiken, sången, inlevelsen och stämningen, fullträff rakt igenom! Jag pratar om sjätte spåret på Erotic Elks tredje platta – “Wicked Games”. Originalet av Chris Isaak, med en video som klassats som den sexigaste. Jag vill inte jämföra versionerna, för dom är väldigt olika, men helt underbara båda två.
Tre år har det alltså tagit för den här duon, med Tomas Gustafson och Fredrik Sigeback, att fullborda detta alster och under den här tiden har det hänt massor: Man har skaffat sig en helt ny arsenal av maskiner till sin studio, mest analogt. Sångaren måste tagit sånglektioner, eller bara övat en massa, för det är just sången som tagit enorma steg framåt: En stabilitet, tonsäkerhet och inlevelse levereras på skivans fjorton spår.
Musiken är pop i den skönaste form, härliga bastoner som ackompanjeras av välsnickrade melodislingor och en lågmäld och melodiös sång. Spår som “Surrender”, “Higher”, “Burning Down Your House” och “What You Give is What You Get” levererar musik i stil med det som Vanguard, Zynic och dess likar har levererat tidigare. Stämningsfull synthpop med en härlig nerv. Jag skulle inte bli allt för överraskad om jag snart hör någon av dessa låtar på ett dansgolv i närheten, för där hör dom verkligen hemma.
Ju mer jag lyssnar på den här skivan desto mer växer också de långsammare låtarna, som den avslutande “Never Stay the Same”. Denna låt är så utelämnande och sången är så sårbart naken. Jag kommer på mig själv att jag går och nynnar på den när jag är på jobbet. Bara en sådan sak.
Jag ger det här albumet ett väldigt högt betyg, mest för att hela plattan känns så genomarbetad, utvecklingen från föregående plattor är stor, och för att “Wicked Games” har väckts till liv igen.
Vad du än gör, missa inte “III”.

Three years of maturity makes all the difference
First of all, what a cover they’ve done of the 1991 monsterhit! The music, the singing, empathy and the atmosphere, hit straight through!
I’m talking about the sixth track on Erotic Elk’s third album – “Wicked Games”. The original from Chris Isaak, with a video classed as the sexiest. I do not want to compare versions because they are very different but both of them absolutely gorgeous.
Three years was needed for this Swedish duo with Tomas Gustafson and Fredrik Sigeback to complete this album and during this time a lot has happened: They’ve acquired a whole new arsenal of equipment to their studio, mostly analogue. The singer must have been taking singing-lessons, or just practiced a lot, because that the singing qualities have taken huge steps forward: Stability, tonal accuracy and empathy is delivered on the disc’s fourteen tracks.
The music is pop in the most beautiful form, beautiful bass tones that are accompanied by well-crafted melodies and a low-key and melodic vocals. Tracks like “Surrender”, “Higher”, “Burning Down Your House” and “What You Give is What You Get” gives us music in the style of what bands like Vanguard, Zynic and others have delivered in the past. Atmospheric synth pop with a lovely nerve. I would not be too surprised if I soon get to hear one of those songs on a dance floor close by, because that’s where they truly belong.
The more I listen to this album the more the slower songs, like the concluding “Never Stay the Same” grows on me. This song is so omission and the singing is so vulnerable and naked. I find myself humming it when I’m at work and that tells you something.
I give this album a very high rating, mostly because the whole album feels so elaborate, the evolution from the previous work is huge, and above that for Erotic Elk bringing “Wicked Games” back to life.
Whatever you do, do not miss “III”.
