Boytronic på riktigt
På rak hand kan jag inte komma på något tidigare fall där en avhoppad originalsångare och dennes ersättare slagit sina påsar samman och väckt nytt liv i ett band där båda varit frontfigurer. Nu har det i alla fall hänt. På The Robot Treatment gör Holger Wobker, som en gång var med och grundade Boytronic, gemensam sak med James Knights som plockades in som sångare på förra plattan Jewel (2017) och som samtidigt är högst aktuell med sitt eget soloprojekt Knight$.
Holger bidrar med det där omisskännliga Boytronic-uttrycket som ligger mycket i hans karaktäristiska röst, medan James kryddar med en stor dos av sin kärlek till 80-talet och den unika hybriden av synthpop och italo disco som kännetecknar hans sologrejer. Detta märks direkt i ”Under the Red” som efter ett kort intro inleder albumet och sätter tonen för vad som komma skall.
I efterföljande singelspåret ”All You Can Eat” lyser James Knights igenom med sin krispigt producerade ”britalo” som lika gärna kunde varit hämtad från hans soloplatta som släpptes tidigare i år. Både Holger och James greppar mikrofonen i detta sprakande dansgolvsfyrverkeri.
Precis som på tidigare Boytronic-album blandas upptempolåtarna upp med aningen lugnare midtemponummer, som exempelvis ”Smell of Fire”, som lätt hade platsat på The Continental, och Pet Shop Boys-doftande ”You Can’t Get Fooled By Love”.
Som band har Boytronic genomgått otaliga lineups med varierande framgång. De gånger Holger Wobker varit ombord är dock de gånger det verkligen känts att det är på riktigt, och The Robot Treatment är absolut inget undantag. Hans samarbete med James Knights har resulterat i ett album som är precis lagom retro samtidigt som det blickar framåt. Jag håller tummarna för att detta samarbete håller i sig och bjuder på mer musik framöver.

Boytronic for real
Off the top of my head I can’t think of any previous instance where a former original singer and his replacement have come together and brought new life to a band they both have fronted. Well, now it’s happened. On The Robot Treatment Holger Wobker, who once founded Boytronic, join forces with James Knights who was brought in as singer on the last album Jewel (2017) and who is also keeping busy with his own solo project Knight$.
Holger brings that unmistakable Boytronic vibe that is so much embedded in his voice, while James spices things up with his love of the 80s and the unique hybrid of synthpop and italo disco that characterizes his solo output. This becomes immediately apparent in ”Under the Red” that opens the album after a short intro and sets the tone for what’s to come.
Next up is the single ”All You Can Eat” where James Knights shines through with his crisply produced ”britalo” that could very much have been taken from his solo album that was released earlier this year. Both Holger and James take to the mic in this sparkling dance floor stomper.
Just like on earlier Boytronic albums the uptempo songs are interspersed with slightly slower midtmpo numbers, such as ”Smell of Fire”, which wouldn’t have been out of place on The Continental, and the Pet Shop Boys-tinted ”You Can’t Get Fooled By Love”.
Boytronic as a band has gone through a countless number of lineup changes, with varying degrees of success. However, the times when Holger Wobker has been on board are the times when it has felt for real, and The Robot Treatment is by no means an exception. His collaboration with James Knights is just the right level of retro while still being forward-looking. I’m crossing my fingers that this team-up will bring us more music in the years to come.
