Två empatiska debutalbum räddar synthåret 2017
Empathy Tests två (!) debutalbum “Safe From Harm” och “Losing Touch” är årets hittills bästa skivsläpp! “Losing Touch” innehåller sex låtar som är bättre än Depeche Modes “Here is the House” (1986) och “Safe From Harm” fyra! Lyssna på likheterna med DM:s pärla, t ex på fina “Here is the Place” på “Losing Touch”. Empathy Tests album är kanske inte riktigt i närheten av mästerverk som “Forever Young” (1984) av Alphaville, som t ex Brutal Resonance hävdar, men de är bättre än både “Wonderland” (1986) med Erasure, “Upstairs at Eric’s” (1982) med Yazoo och “The Bones What We Believe” (2013) med CHVRCHES. Förstår ni då hur bra de är?
Barndomsvännerna Isaac Howlett och Adam Relf från London har lyckats skapa samma smarta moderna synth, med basgångar inspirerade av modern dansmusik, suveräna melodier, vettiga texter och undersköna eteriska falsettrefränger som Hurts hade på debutalbumet “Happiness” (2010). Empathy Test är mer lågmäld och elegant electro än tidiga Hurts som var mer upptempo och traditionell synthpop men de är klart jämförbara. Isaac Howlett sjunger fantastiskt bra, i klass med Brett Anderson i Suede (även om han har en bit kvar i sitt live-uttryck för att bli lika cool som Brett) som han t o m liknar till utseendet. Howlett kanske inte har samma världsklassklang i rösten som Hurtssångaren Theo Hutchcraft, men efter Hurts senaste estetiska albumhaveri så måste vi betrakta Howlett och Kites Niklas Stenemo som två av synthens absolut bästa manliga sångare. Det är en sådan befrielse att avnjuta kvalitetssynth på oklanderlig engelska från en duktig sångare när genren i allmänhet plågas av en massa svaga vokalister.
Låten “Losing Touch” är ett mästerverk, vemodig text, stark refräng och en gåshudsframkallande överstämma. Det är årets hit (även om den egentligen kom 2014). “Holding On” är nästa lika bra. På “Safe From Harm” är “Bare My Soul”, “Vampire Town” och “Seeing Stars” de bästa låtarna. Inte en enda låt på något av albumen är egentligen dålig, och när hände det senast att album höll så här hög och jämn kvalitetsnivå? Ska man säga någonting negativt så skulle det kanske vara att de nya låtarna kanske inte riktigt är lika starka som de bästa tidigare utgivna singlarna, även om “Siamese” och Purity Ring-coola “Firelight” är utmärkta. De egenhändigt remastrade versionerna av de äldre låtarna låter märkbart bättre än de tidigare versionerna.
Efter att ha varit förband åt Mesh, Aesthetic Perfection och VNV Nation och tillsammans med Kite varit bäst på Amphi 2017 är det dags för Empathy Test att erövra världen.

Two amazingly emphatic debut albums
Empathy Test’s two (!) debut albums “Safe From Harm” and “Losing Touch” are certainly the best albums of 2017! “Losing Touch” contains six songs that are better than “Here is the House” (1986) by Depeche Mode and “Safe From Harm” four. Listen to the soundscape simularities to DM’s synth pop jewel noticeable e.g. at “Here is the Place”. Brutal Resonance claimed the records to be masterpieces but there are a few songs left before they produce an integrated album such as “Forever Young” (1984) by Alphaville. But both albums are better than major debut albums such as “Wonderland” (1986) by Erasure, “Upstairs at Eric’s” (1982) with Yazoo and “The Bones What We Believe” (2013) by CHVRCHES. Now, do you understand how great the childhood friends Isaac Howlett and Adam Relf‘s two debut albums achievement really is?
The young London duo Howlett and Relf have created the same smart and contemporary synth music, with deep bass from modern dance music, beautiful and clear melodies, clever texts and marvelous falsetto choruses as Hurts presented on their famous debut album “Happiness” (2010). Empathy Test reminds me a lot of Hurts in their early years, but there are obvious differences. Hurts were more uptempo and played traditional 80’ties synth pop, Empathy Test on the other side play a more quiet and subtle 2010’s electro. Howlett sings amazingly, equal to Brett Anderson in Suede, who he looks quite alike, and Hurts’ world class singer Theo Hutchcraft. Unfortunately he has not yet Bret’s live personality as we could see at the Amphi festival in Cologne in July 2017 although it was a pleasant gig. It is such a great experience enjoying quality synth music with perfect voice and impeccable pronounciation when the genre in general is plagued by poor vocal performances.
The song “Losing Touch” is a masterpiece, sad and strong lyrics, beautiful chorus, I get goosebumps from the exquisite conform every time. It is the best song this year although it was actually released already in 2014. But the remastred versions of the earlier singles make them sound better than ever before. The song “Holding On” is pure world-class with another delicate falsetto. My favorites on the “Safe From Harm” album are “Bare My Soul”, “Vampire Town” and “Seeing Star”. Not a single song on any of the two albums is weak and when did that happen last time? The only criticism I can think of might be that some of the new materials do not reach the level of some of the previously released singles, but both “Siamese” and the Purity Ring-cool “Firelight” are very strong songs.
Empathy Test has toured with Mesh, Aesthetic Perfection and VNV Nation, and together with Swedish Kite they were best at Amphi 2017. It is now time for Empathy Test to conquer the world.
