Bra produktion och varierad helhet men trög i starten

”Hard-hitting yet elegant” beskriver Australienfödda musikerna Pete Crane och Ben Lee Bulig sitt band SHIV-R som, eller ett ”monstrously seductive project.” De är också ett av de där banden som tar det estetiska uttrycket på största allvar. De har lyckats bygga upp ett rykte som ett riktigt bra liveband och även skapat några riktigt snygga videor, ibland rent bloddrypande (”The End”). Deras estetiska teman kommer ofta från fetisch-scenens mode mixat med BDSM och vampirism. Själva anser de sig skapa ”a unique aural and visual aesthetic, creating a world of fear, aggression and self-expression to confront the shadows within ourselves.” Deras beskrivningar är målande och ger en ganska bra bild av vad det hela handlar om.

SHIV-R springer ur aggrotech/dark electro-genren men har många element som är långt mer nyanserade och sofistikerade än så. ”Wax Wings Will Burn” tar ännu ett steg åt det mer varierade hållet med flera lugna spår som ligger tämligen långt ifrån deras två tidigare, hårdare album. Den tidigare så självklara kopplingen till dansgolvet har frångåtts på flertalet spår vilket gör skivan mer varierad och mindre kompakt än de tidigare. Men självklart finns också de klassiska SHIV-R-låtarna med och ser till att mörkerklubbarnas dansgolv får ett välkommet tillskott av untz-untz.

I vanlig ordning inleds albumet med en stämingsfull introlåt; ”Asylum”, men istället för att dunka igång tempot i den första riktiga låten så bjuds vi en halvlugn låt med gitarrinslag och melodiös sång. ”Monster” är en av de mest avvikande låtarna och även om den inte är dum alls så skulle den passa bättre senare på skivan. Nu blir det en märklig inledning på albumet som inte alls sätter ribban där den borde ligga. ”Eye of the Needle” låter mer typiskt SHIV-R men har inte heller den fullt tempo och insprängt i vissa partier finns något så obskyrt i sammanhanget som melodiös skönsång. Inledningen av albumet känns därför lite lam. Även fjärde låten ”Territory” är alldeles för avvaktande och sammantaget ger det känslan av att skivan inte riktigt vill komma igång.

Det är först med ”Wolfes” som det kickar igång lite mer ordentligt, fast även denna har sina långsamma partier och en väldigt melodiös refräng som knappast hör till det hårdare SHIV-R har gjort. Riktigt dansgolvstryck uppstår inte förrän på hårdstampande ”Chemical” som är mer typiskt för bandet.

”Dance the Apocalypse” är inte alls någon danslåt men har ett härligt bombastiskt sound med starkt kontrasterande lugna partier. Knappast någon hit men ett riktigt skönt albumspår. ”Of the Machine” är i mitt tycke det bästa spåret och den troligaste klubbhitten. Här är tempot högt och sången betydligt aggressivare än i de flesta andra låtar. ”Shadow with a Voice” är nästan lika bra den och håller tempot uppe, dessutom med en riktigt bra refräng.

”Blood Rose” är en ballad med lite pianoplink i som bryter tvärt mot urladdningen innan. Därefter följer hyfsade ”Payload” före två avslutande låtar som inte förmår engagera nämnvärt.

Sammantaget är ”Wax Wings Will Burn” en mycket proffsigare producerad och arrangerad skiva än SHIV-R:s två tidigare. Den har fler strängar på sin lyra och varierar uttrycket på ett helt annat sätt. Däremot är jag förvånad över hur de valt att placera låtarna på skivan. Hade de snabbare och tyngre spåren fått komma in tidigare så hade den känts mycket piggare. De lugna inledande låtarna är visserligen bra i sig men ger plattan ett något trögstartat intryck. Att placera de potentiella klubbhitsen på plats 8 och 9 är vågat, måste man säga.

Good production and varied whole, but a slow starter

The Australia-born musicians Pete Crane and Ben Lee Bulig describe their band SHIV-R as “Hard-hitting yet elegant”, or like a “monstrously seductive project.” They are also one of those bands that take their aesthetic expression very seriously. They have managed to build a reputation of beeing a great live band and also creators of some really aesthetic videos, albeit sometimes ever so gory (”The End”). Their aesthetic themes typically come from the fetish fashion scene mixed with BDSM and vampirism. Themselves they call it “a unique aural and visual aesthetic, Creating a World of fear, aggression and self-expression to confront the shadows within ourselves.” Their descriptions are not misleading.

SHIV-R springs from aggrotech/dark electronica genre, but has many elements and passages that are far more nuanced and sophisticated than that. “Wax Wings Will Burn” is taking another step towards more variation and with several soft tracks which are quite far from their two previous, harder albums. The earlier so obvious connection to the dancefloor has been broken by a number of tracks that makes the record more diverse and less compact than the previous ones. But of course there are still some classic SHIV-R songs that well ensure the dark club dancefloors getting a welcome addition of untz-untz.

Like before, the album begins with some kind of moody intro song, “Asylum“. Instead of a pumped up beat for the first real song we get a rather soft song with guitar elements and melodic vocals. “Monster” is one of the most divergent songs, and even though it’s not bad at all, it would be better placed later on the album. Now it creates an atypical start to the album that is not setting the bar where it should be. “Eye of the Needle” sounds more typical SHIV-R, but is still no real upbeat song and also has lots of melodic singing interspersed. Therefore the album start feels a bit lame. Also the fourth song “Territory” is far too cautious and altogether it provides the feeling that the album doesn’t really want to take off.

The beat doesn’t kick in for real until “Wolfes“, even though it also has some soft parts and a type of melodic chorus that didn’t exist on earlier material. Actually serious dancefloor pressure does not occur until the hard pounding “Chemical” which is much more typical for the band.

“Dance the Apocalypse” is not a dance tune at all but has a brilliantly bombastic sound with strongly contrasting soft parts. Hardly any hit but a really nice album track nevertheless. “Of the Machine” is in my opinion the best track and the most likely club hit single. Here the tempo is high and the song much more aggressively than most of the other tracks. “Shadow with a Voice” is almost as good and keeps the momentum going, and with a really good chorus too.

“Blood Rose” is a ballad with a little melancholic piano plonk that really smooth things down again. The fairly good song “Payload” follow this before the two final songs that fails to engage the listener.

Overall, “Wax Wings Will Burn” is a more professionally produced and arranged record than SHIV-R‘s two earlier. It has more strings to its bow and varies expression in a completely different way. However, I’m surprised how they chose to arrange the order of the songs on the album. Had the fast and heavy beat tracks come earlier it would have felt much more energetic. The soft opening songs are certainly good by themselves but give the record a somewhat slow start impression. Placing the potential club hits as far back as number 8 and 9 are daring, you have to say.
