Finsk synthpop kan bli bättre

Det har hänt en del med finsk populärmusik sedan Kojo kom sist i Eurovisionsfestivalen 1982 med “Nuku pommiin” (med noll poäng). HIM, Bomfunk MC’s och The Rasmus har skapat världshittar. 2006 vann monsterrockarna i Lordi Eurovision Song Contest – denna tävling i skändlighet och musikhat som endast överträffas av vår nationella vämjlighetsversion, så m a o har vårt finsk-ugriska brödrafolk redan placerat sig på popmusikkartan, på gott och ont. Och nu kommer Sad January med en sympatisk syntppopplatta.

Sad January bjuder på en melodiös synthpop i Erasure-anda, fast de största musikaliska lånen har hämtats från Alphavilles “Forever Young”. Första låten, “Just Stop Believing” lånar versmelodi från “Sounds Like a Melody” och pekoralen “Avenue of Lost Desire” versmelodi från “Big in Japan”. Vokalisten Lasse Laurila har en stark och samtidigt ljus, lätt och pojkaktigt stämma och låter i allt väsentligt mycket likt svenske Jens Lekman. Tyvärr är Kimmo Kautios texter långtifrån lika Morrisseysmarta och fyndiga som Lekmans. Bäst på “Believe in Better” är “Insecure” med Camouflagesnygga synthljud och en stark refräng, “Intro” med sina surrande ljud och “Visions of You” – en fin Pet Shop Boys-orienterad melankolisk poplåt.

“Believe in Better” är ingen dålig platta. Den är bara inte särskilt bra. Det är som med så mycket annan skandinavisk synthpop – t ex Elegant Machinery och Kiethevez m fl – det når aldrig riktigt fram. Bristerna återfinns liksom över hela linjen: i originalitet, texter, röstomfång och stämmor, ljud, trummor, övergripande produktion och konstnärlig pregnans. Resultaten är veka skuggbilder av de nyskapande 80-talsoriginalen man försöker kopiera.

Sad January har redan lovat en hårdare skiva och elva låtar ska finnas klara för utgivning 2015. Jag tror det kan bli bättre.

Finnish synth pop can be better

There has been a huge development in Finnish pop music since Kojo’s lost in the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 with zero points. HIM, Bomfunk MC’s and The Rasmus have created hits all over the world. In 2006 the monster rockers Lordi won the Eurovision Song Contest – a European competition in lewdness and hatred against pop music, so our Finno-Ugric brothers, from a Swedish perspective, on the other side of the Baltic Sea, has already placed themselves on the international arena before Sad January launched their sympathetic synthpop album “Believe in Better”.

Sad January offers Erasure oriented synthpop, although the major musical influences are directly taken from Alphaville’s Forever Young-album from 1984. The first tune, “Stop Believing”, takes the melody from “Sounds Like a Melody”, and “Avenue of Lost Desire” do the trick againg but this time from “Big in Japan”. I hope Sad January credit Alphaville for these obvious artistic loans.

The singer, Lasse Laurila, has a young, light, yet warm tone in his voice that reminds Swedish listeners of the voice of the pop star Jens Lekman. Unfortunately, the lyrics by Jaakko Hernesahos are not as Morrissey-clever as Lekman’s.

The best songs on the album are “Insecure”, a great song with a Camouflage sentiment and great sounds, Intro with buzzing sounds, and the pop ballad “Visions of You” with impressions of Pet Shop Boys.

“Believe in Better” is not a poor album. It’s just not good. It resembles most Scandinavian synth pop, e.g. Swedish Elegant Machinery and Kiethevez. It never gets there. There are minor flaws all over the line, originality, lyrics, voice quality and voicing’s, sounds, drums, production and artistic stature. The end results are weak shadows of the innovatory music of the 80’ties that they are trying to copy.

Sad January has promised a harder album and eleven new songs are already created to be launched in 2015. We believe it can be better.

Detaljerna för den sjunde delen i Conzoom Records populära samlingsserie Electropop är nu klara. Över tretton spår presenteras det mest intressanta från genren – med bidrag från flera kontinenter.

Inkluderade är bland andra australiensiska Space March, det svensk-amerikanska projektet Polaroid Kiss och ryska Mental Discipline med klubbhiten “Fallen Stars” där man fått gästspel på sång av Diorama– och Frozen Plasma-sångaren Felix Marc.

Utöver detta en lång rad nya och intressanta nya (och gamla) namn som Casm, Daniel, Sad January och The Sound Of The Crowd.

Utöver detta även svenska bidrag i form av Cold Connection, det nya projektet från Jonas Asp och Pontus Mattsson, som tidigare är kända från dance/electropop-trion Dual Density tillsammans med sångerskan Tess Friess.

Electropopkonstellationen Cinemascape bidrar med en ny remix av “Night Vision”, hämtad från debutalbumet “The Falling Impossible” signerad den tyska synthpoptrion Channel-East, albumaktuella med “Window To Earth”.
