Värdigt jubileumsalbum från De/Vision

Trettioårsjubilerande De/Vision släpper lagom till midsommar nya albumet Citybeats. Singeln “They Won’t Silence Us” gick omedelbart upp på plats nummer två på de för ekonomin så viktiga tyska DAC– (Deutsche Alternative Charts) och GEWC-listan (German Electronic WebCharts) för band i synthgenren när den släpptes för två veckor sedan. Veckan efter låg “They Won’t Silence Us” etta på DAC. Jag ger inte mycket för Avicii-slingan men gillar man Erasure så uppskattar man sannolikt singeln och kritiken av övervakningssamhället som låter handlar om och som keyboardisten Thomas Adam nämner i pressmaterialet är viktig.

Men det finns bättre låtar, Depechepopiga introlåten “In the Still of the Night” och Depecherockiga “A Storm is Rising”, till exempel. Mollsläpiga “Dystopia” är också njutbar. Berlinduon Steffen Keth och Thomas Adam har med Citybeats skapat ännu en proffsig och njutningsbar symfonisynthplatta. Trots att alltså trettio år gått sedan debuten sjunger Steffen Keth alltjämt med den äran även om registret kanske blivit något mindre med åren och de högre tonerna något färre. Citybeats påminner på många sätt om föregående albumet 13 (2016) vilket också var en blandning av Depeche Mode, Ultravox och The Beatles. På en elegant basmatta av Depechesynth från 2000-talet kombineras harmonier, melodier och stämsång från de tidigare nämnda banden. Andra låten “We Own the Night” är en utmärkt kombination av senare DM med en melodi tydligt inspirerad av Ultravox-plattorna Rage in Eden eller Quartet. Bästa låten är den sista, vemodiga “Last Goodbye”, den har albumets bästa refräng och sånginsats.

Citybeats är ytterligare ett värdigt album från De/Vision.

Thirty years of dignity with De/Vision

The new album Citybeats marks the thirty years anniversary of De/Vision. The new single “They Won’t Silence Us” went straight to number 2 on the financially, for the bands in the genre, German charts DAC (Deutsche Alternative Charts) and GEWC (German Electronic WebCharts). One week later the single on top of the DAC list. I am not found of the Avicii EDM melody but if you fancy Erasure you will sure enjoy the song. The noticeable and vital critique of the growing surveillance and big brother society, mentioned in the lyrics, was emphazised by keyboard player Thomas Adam in the press kit information. But there are other songs, the Depeche Mode pop in the intro song “In the Still of the Night”, the Depeche Mode rock in “A Storm is Rising”, and the drawling minor song “Dystopia” are worth mentioning.

The Berlin duo Steffen Keth and Thomas Adam has created another fine synth music album. Regardless of the thirty years since the debut, the singer Steffen Keth still sings very well. Citybeats reminds a lot of the previous album 13 (2016) which also was a combination of influences from Depeche Mode and Ultravox but also of The Beatles. It is fine pop with some great voices and profound dignity and loyalty to the genre. The second song on the new album “We Own the Night” is a great example of the combination of late DM and a melody that you could have found on the early 80’ties album Rage in Eden or Quartet by Ultravox. The best song is the last one, the melancholy “Last Goodbye”, it has the best chorus and vocal performance. Gut gemacht mannschaft!

Efter Rockets + Swords (2013) och framgångarna med den förra fullängdaren 13 (2016), som klättrade ända upp till elfteplatsen på den tyska försäljningslistan, så är nu 30-års jubilerande De/Vision redo att presentera det nya albumet Citybeats.

Citybeats blir de tyska synthpopgiganternas fjortonde studioalbum i ordningen och introduceras via den första singeln “They Won’t Silence Us” (se videon nedan). Utöver den ordinarie utgåvan med tio spår så släpps albumet även i en begränsad dubbeldiscutgåva som kan förbokas här redan nu! ***

De/Vision, som numera består av sångaren Steffen Keth och Thomas Adam, bildades i tyska Benheim redan 1988. Efter att ha släppt ett par demokassetter och liveinspelningar så fick bandet sitt genombrott via de numera klassiska hitsinglarna “Your Hands On My Skin” (1990), “Boy on the Street” (1992) och “Try to Forget” (1993). 1995 släppte De/Visions två första studioalbum Antiquity och Unversed in Love.

Citybeats släpps den 22 juni via Popgefahr Records.

Symfonisynthpop med bredd

Tyska De/Vision är ett av många Depeche Mode-låtliknande band och ett av de epigonprojekt jag tycker allra mest om. (Efter Mesh förstås.) De startade 1988, året efter Depeche Modes “Music for the Masses” och Camouflages “The Great Commandment”, som en kvartett och på många sätt är det alltjämt där vi träffar dem idag på nya albumet “13” trots att Steffen Keth och Thomas Adam numera utgör en duo.

“13” är mycket riktigt De/Visions trettonde studioalbum och en harmonisk och välljudande symfonisynthhistoria med bas i brittisk pop. För De/Vision har i likhet med landsmännen i Camouflage inte bara Depeche Mode som husgudar utan även Beatles. Camouflage gav 1991 ut Beatlespoppiga “Meanwhile” med producenten Colin Thursten som bl a arbetat med Duran Duran och Talk Talk och den harmoniska skivan framfördes med konventionella instrument och inhyrda musiker. På charmiga “Where’s the Light” och vemodiga balladen “Prisoner” försöker De/Vision göra något liknande. Det är mycket 60-tal över musiken trots att de endast arbetar med synthar, det skaver aldrig en längre tid utan är egentligen alltid balanserat och melodiöst. På den ljusa “Where’s the Light” använder de ett egensinningt opera-vocoderljud som jag tror att både Paul och John hade uppskattat. “Starchild” är ett annat försök att bryta sig ur Depeche Mode-(tvångs-)tröjan och närma sig en annan brittisk storhet – Ultravox. Sångaren Steffen Keth försöker på många sätt här efterlikna Midge Ure. Steffen har inte riktigt klangen eller registret till en “Love’s Great Adventure”, men här finns samma långa vokaler och ett tydligt släktskap. Bäst är “Essence”, en stark symfonisynthlåt med utmärkt text och stort och pretentiöst anslag och en stark melodislinga, som ett eko av en blandning mellan Depeche Modes “Policy of Truth” och “Enjoy the Silence”. Vemodiga “Read Your Mind” känns också fin och äkta. Nya singeln “Who Am I” lyfter inte riktigt men kommer att komma i en massa intressanta mixar på den förlängda utgåvan av “13” som släpps i november.

De/Vision når förutom med “Essence” inte de allra högsta nivåerna trots att de har varit där tidigare. För debutsingeln “Your Hands on my Skin” (1990) eller “Foreigner” på “Void” (1999) och “New Drug” på “Monosex” (1998) hör definitivt till synthpopens kanoner. Men De/Vision gör alltjämt utmärkt, konsekvent och vacker synthpop.

Great symphony synthpop

German De/Vision is one of many Depeche Mode-sounding bands and one of my favourites in this category of epigones (after Mesh, of course.) They started back in the late 80’ies one year after Depeche Mode’s “Music Music for the Masses” and fellow German Camouflage’s “The Great Commandment”. In the beginning, they were four but these days Steffen Keth and Thomas Adam are a duo.

The new album “13” is De/Vision’s 13th studio album and great symphony synthpop based on Brittish pop. De/Vision share household gods with Camouflage and they are not only Depeche Mode but also the Beatles. In 1991 Camouflage released the Beatles-sounding “Meanwhile” produced by Colin Thursten that used to work with Duran Duran and Talk Talk. It had conventional instruments and professional musicians. On charming “Where’s the Light” and the melancholic ballad “Prisoner” De/Vision tries to do something similar. The harmonic base is British pop from the 60’s although they work with computers and synths, it never chafes it’s always in balance. On the bright “Where’s the Light” De/Vision’s got a clever opera-esque vocoder-sound for the melody that would delight to all four Beatles. “Starchild” is another attempt to liberate from the straightjacket of Depeche Mode-synth music and approach another great British band – Ultravox. The singer Steffen Keth tries to reach for Midge Ure-greatness. It is not another “Love’s Great Adventure” but Keth has the same long vowels as Ure and there is a certain affinity.

The best song on the album is “Essence”. It is a pretentious symphony synth pop hymn with strong lyrics and a great melody, a combined mix, and an echo from Depeche Mode’s “Policy of Truth” and “Enjoy the Silence”. The melancholic song “Read Your Mind” feels genuine and strong. “Who Am I”, the new single, does not do it for me, but it will come in several interesting remixes on the extended version of “13” that will be released in November.

De/Vision might not hit the highest heights with the other songs, besides “Essence”, but they have been there before, with their debut single “Your Hands on my Skin” (1990), stunning “Foreigner” from “Void” (1999) and “New Drug” from “Monosex” (1998). De/Vision still make consistent, qualified and beautiful synth pop.

Efter ett par framgångsrika kampanjer under de sista åren så vänder sig De/Vision ännu en gång till Pledgemusic när man nu presenterar bandeta kommande studioalbum.

Den kommande “13”, som precis som titeln antyder blir de tyska synthpopgiganteras trettonde fullängdare, finns nu tillgänglig att förbeställa i ett stort antal olika utgåvor och boxar både på CD och vinyl innehållande såväl demo- som intrumentalversioner samt exklusiva bonusspår. Femspårsmaxin “Who Am I” agerar aptitretare för det nya albumet och inkluderar, utöver tre versioner av titelspåret, även bonuslåtarna “Morphine” och “In the Cold Light of Day”.

De/Vision, som består av sångaren Steffen Keth och Thomas Adam, var senast albumaktuella med “Rockets & Swords” (2012) och har under de senaste åren presenterat både livealbumet “25 Years – Best Of Tour 2013” (2013) och samlingen “Unfinished Tape Sessions” (2014).

Bandet bildades i Bensheim 1988 och gjorde sin officiella albumdebut med “World Without End” (1994).

Synthpop med alla trumfkorten på hand

Den tyska synthpopscenen är fascinerande. Släktet verkar i det närmaste odödligt och år efter år fortsätter den intressera ett stort antal nya akter till att producera musik. Många faller snabbt bort likt dagsländorna på sommaren medan vissa andra klamrar sig fast på samma sätt som den envisa sommarsolen som tappert kämpar med den där obligatoriska regnskuren, ni vet.

Beyond Obsession är ett av alla de nya namnen som har fångat mitt intresse lite extra på senare tid. Faktumet att man drygt ett drygt år efter den tämligen starka debuten “Listen, Learn and Speak” redan är tillbaka med uppföljaren “Pieces of Machinery” är således mycket angenämt.

Många försöker, men få lyckas riktigt bra, och man behöver ju knappast varar raketforskare för att inse vad som är receptet för den här genren: Starkt låtmaterial, en intressant ljudbild och en bra och gärna originell vokalinsats.

Beyond Obsession har alla tre trumfkorten på hand och har på den här uppföljaren tagit precis den väg jag önskade, utan att för den sakens skull tappa bort den röda tråden på vägen. Hörnstenarna är starka melodier och låttexter, som på ett väldigt tacksamt sätt aldrig omges av onödigt svulstiga arrangemang.

Redan halvvägs in i den inledande “Run to You (Some Call it Love)” står det klart att Beyond Obsession har velat göra ett hårdare och mörkare album den här gången med fokus på upptempolåtar. Starka känslor och refräng finns även att finna på “Song for the Dead”, “Beautiful Pain” och den väldigt vackra och avslutande “Love Child”.

“Pieces of Machinery” visar på mognad och framsteg på flera områden. Att Beyond Obsession nu givits äran att turnera med en storhet som And One kommer således inte som någon överraskning. Inte heller att det här albumet släpps på De/Vision-bekantingen Steffen Keths skivbolag Popgefahr Records.

Synthpop that holds all the trump cards

The German synthpop scene is fascinating. The genus seems almost immortal, and year after year it interests a large number of new acts to start producing music. Many falls quickly away like mayflies in the summer while others cling to on like the stubborn summer sun valiantly struggling with that mandatory downpour, you know.

Beyond Obsession is one of all the new names that have caught my interest a little extra recently. The fact that they already a little more than a year after the strong debut “Listen, Learn and Speak” are back with the follow-up “Pieces of Machinery” is therefor very pleasant.

Many try, few succeed really well, and it’s hardly rocket science realizing what is the recipe is for this genre: Strong song material, an interesting sound and a good and original vocal effort.

Beyond Obsession’s got all three trump cards in their hand and has done it just the way I wanted them to on this sequel, without losing their thread in the process. The fundamental cornerstones of strong melodies and lyrics are still there, and are in a very rewarding way never surrounded by unnecessarily pompous arrangements.

Already halfway through the initial “Run To You (Some Call it Love)” it is clear that Beyond Obsession wanted to do a harder and darker album this time around with the main focus on up-tempo songs. Strong emotions and chorus are delivered on songs like “Song for the Dead”,  “Beautiful Pain” and the very beautiful and concluding “Love Child”.

“Pieces of Machinery” shows the maturity and progress in several areas. Beyond Obsession has recently been given the honor of touring with a big nam like And One that doesn’t come to me as any surprise at all. Neither does the fact that this album is released on De/Vision-acquaintance Steffen Keth’s label Popgefahr Records.

Efter den senaste fullängdaren “Rockets & Swords” så är tyska De/Vision nu redo att presentera samlingsboxen “Strange Days”.

“Strange Days” levererar nymastrade utgåvor av bandets tre tidiga album: “World Without End” (1994), “Unversed in Love” (1995) och “Fairyland?” (1995). De tre albumen är spridda över fyra CD-skivor som utöver originalspåren innehåller ett antal bonusspår, b-sidor och remixer **.

Boxen släpps i samband med att bandets tredje singelsläpp “Try to Forget” firar tjugo år och titeln är vald med omsorg. Singeln var nämligen bandets första släpp på Lothar Gärthers Bremen-baserade Strange Ways Records där man också släppte de tre albumen i fråga innan skiftet till WEA Records under 1998.

I anslutning till släppet av samlingsboxen så har man även lanserat ett projekt via Pledgemusic för en planerad live-CD/DVD som skall spelas in under årets “25 Years – Best of…Tour 2013”. Utöver denna har man även önskemål om att få släppa “Unfinished Tape Sessions”, en samlingsskiva som kommer innehålla en rad demo- och udda versioner av bandets äldre material samt en del outgivna låtar. Ett antal smakprov kan avnjutas via bandets sida på Soundcloud.

De/Vision bildades i Bensheim redan 1988 som en kvartett bestående av den nuvarande duon med sångaren och frontmannen Steffen Keth samt keyboardisten Thomas Adam tillsammans med (de numera avhoppade) bandmedlemmarna Markus Canssert (som lämnade 1991) och Stefan Blender (som lämnade år 2000).

Genom åren har man levererat en lång rad hits över ett antal starka album. Bandet har spelat live världen över och har fått äran att stå på de allra största festivalscenerna under en lång rad år.
