Varje generation har sina egna hjältar

“Varje generation har sina egna hjältar” var ett av de kloka citat som Bill Leeb leverade under intervjun jag fick med honom i samband med Front Line Assemblys senaste Sverigebesök i mars i år och det faktumet kan appliceras i flera olika relevanta sammanhang. Rent allmänt när det kommer till musik, men i synnerhet när det kommer till han och hans högra hand Rhys Fulbers gemensamma sidoprojekt Delerium, som fyra år efter “Music Box Opera” nu är tillbaka med “Mythologie”.

Delerium är ett musikprojekt som länge har varit i ständig rörelse och det är alla ni som har varit med hela resan väl medvetna om. Den inleddes i det sena åttiotalets mörka industriella och ambienta soundtracks för att sedan, med hjälp av ett antal begåvade sångare och sångerskor, ta oss fram till den senaste två decenniernas vidareutvecklade ethereal-pop. Men som Bill Leeb mycket riktigt underströk, varje generation har ju sina egna hjältar och med tanke på hur pass annorlunda det låter idag jämfört med när det begav sig så gäller det verkligen just Delerium.

Men som jag sa till Bill den där gråmulna tisdagseftermiddagen på Debaser Strand i Stockholm: “Det finns små bitar av all musik ni någonsin skapat i Delerium..“ och ingenting kunde vara mer korrekt. “Mythologie” understryker den genialitet, fantasirikedom och vilja som de här kanadensarna har att ständigt förnya och utveckla sig. Grundplattformen är alltid välbekant, ta singeln “Ritual” (som släpptes innan albumet) som exempel, där hela programmeringen och arrangemanget i stort påminner förvånande mycket om “Blood” från det senaste Front Line Assembly-albumet “Echogenetic”.

En dryg handfull nyupptäckta sångerskor medverkar den här gången, faktiskt fler än någonsin på ett Delerium-album. Den enda bekantingen sedan tidigare är Jaël Malli som levererar ännu en kristallklar sånginsats på den vackra “Keep on Dreaming”. “Ghost Requiem” (med Geri Soriano-Lightwood), “Once in a Lifetime“ och den snygga nutida electropoplåten “Stay” (båda med JES) är för övrigt samtliga drömska ethereal electropophits av rang medan de mer komplexa numren som “Angels” (med Mimi Page) och “Continuum” (med Leah Randi) förmedlar en känsla av triphop i stil med band som Lamb eller Massive Attack.

Förra albumet “Music Box Opera” var trots några få svagheter ett bra elektroniskt popalbum med ethereal touch, men “Mythologie” är ett ännu bättre album  som understryker att firma Leeb och Fulber tillsammans med den nytillkomna medarbetarna Jared Slingerland och Craig Johnsen verkligen har en fantastisk vilja att ta Delerium vidare framåt.

Each generation has its own heroes

“Each generation has its own heroes” was one of the wise quotes that Bill Leeb delivered in the interview I did with him when Front Line Assembly visited Sweden back in March this year, and that fact can be applied in a wide variety of relevant contexts. In general when it comes to music, but especially when it comes to him and his right-hand Rhys Fulber’s common side project Delerium, that four years after the latest album “Music Box Opera” now make their return with “Mythologie”.

Delerium is a music project that has been in a constant motion for a long time and that’s something that all of you whom been around the whole trip are well aware of. It all began in the late eighties with the industrial and dark ambient soundtracks and then, with the help of a number of talented singers, it has taken us to the past two decades further developed ethereal pop sound. Though, as Bill Leeb rightly pointed out, each generation has its own heroes and considering how different it sounds today compared to back in the days it really can be adapted to the case of Delerium history.

Though, as I told Bill that grey Tuesday afternoon at Debaser Strand in Stockholm: “There are bits and pieces of everything you’ve done in Delerium..” and nothing could be more accurate. “Mythologie” underscores the ingenuity, wealth of imagination and desire that these Canadians have to constantly innovate and develop. The basic platform is always familiar, take the single “Ritual” (which was released before the album) as an example, where the whole programming and arrangement resembles surprisingly alot of “Blood” from the latest Front Line Assembly album “Echogenetic”.

A handful of newly discovered singers have participated this time, actually more than ever before on a Delerium album. The only acquaintance already known is Jael Malli who delivers another stunning and crystal clear vocal performance on the beautiful “Keep on Dreaming”. “Ghost Requiem” (with Geri Soriano-Lightwood), “Once in a Lifetime” and the stylish contemporary electropop song “Stay” (both with JES) are all kind of dreamy ethereal electronic pop hits of high quality, while the more complex numbers such as “Angels” (with Mimi Page) and “Continuum” (with Leah Randi) conveys a sense of trip-hop in the style of bands like Lamb or Massive Attack.

The last album “Music Box Opera” was despite a few weaker points a good electronic pop album with ethereal touch, but “Mythologie” is an even better album. It underscores that the duo Leeb and Fulber, along with the newly added employees Jared Slingerland and Craig Johnsen, really have a great willingness to take Delerium even further forward.
