Egensinning, nyckfull och originell brittisk electro

Den brittiska trion Wrangler, som består av Cabaret Voltaire-bekantingen Stephen Mallinder, Ben Edwards (från bland annat John Foxx and The Maths) och Tunng-medlemmen Phill Winter, följer nu upp debutalbumet “LA Spark” (2014) med “White Glue”.

Det är måhända lite mer lättlyssnat den här gången men anslaget är fortfarande lika egensinnigt, nyckfullt och originellt som tidigare på de här nio nykomponerade spåren. Soundet är genomgående väldigt analogt, rått och kantigt i typisk brittisk stil där mängder av snygga detaljer fyller ljudbilden där de små pusselbitarna passar perfekt in i varandra och tillsammans formar en ytterst välbalanserad ljudkuliss. Känslan är att varje enskilt ljud fyller en funktion för helheten när väl sammansatta analoga synthsekvenserna och looparna möter de simpla, men ack så ljuva, melodislingorna.

Electro-funkiga spår som den inledande “Alpha Omega” och den bluesdoftande (singeln) “Stupid” mixas med den medryckande och snudd på beroendeframkallande “Dirty” samt vocodekryddade, rymdigt ambienta och repetetiva rytmiska nummer som “Clockwork” och den avslutande “Colliding”. De luftiga och rena får sedan en perfekt motvikt i några låtar med en mer tjock, mörk och rå framtoning, som de dansanta och väldigt kryptiskt komplexa “Real Life” och “Superset”.

När jag hyllade Wranglers debutalbum “LA Spark” för drygt två år sedan så underströk jag faktumet att det här må vara svårt för den stora massan att ta till sig, men jag är fullkomligt golvad av “White Glue” som tveklöst är ett av det här årets mest genomarbetade, tidlösa och unika album.

Notering: Tidigare under sommaren släppte Wrangler även det experimentella remixalbumet “Sparked: Modular Remix Project” där bland andra Daniel Miller, Chris Carter och Solvent levererar remixer på ett antal spår från debutalbumet. Värt att kolla in för alla er som gillar modularsynthar!

Original and whimsical brittish electro

The British trio Wrangler, with the former Cabaret Voltaire member Stephen Mallinder, Ben Edwards (from John Foxx and The Maths) and Phill Winter (from Tunng), are now back with “White Glue”, the follow-up to their debut album “LA Spark” that was released back in 2014.

It’s clearly more accessible this time around, but the touch is still as whimsical as before on these nine new compositions. The sound is very analogue, raw and edgy in a quite typically Brittish way where many nice details fill the soundstage where the small pieces consistently fit perfectly into each other and to shape an extremely well-balanced sound backdrop to the songs. I get the feeling that each and every sound has its own role to play in the whole sound where precise analog synth sequences and loops meet often quite simple but oh so sweet melodies.

Electro-funky tracks like the initial “Alpha Omega” and the bluesy (single) “Stupid” are mixed up with captivating and almost addictive tracks like “Dirty” and then spacious, ambient and repetetive rhythmic tracks filled with vocoders like “Clockwork” and the final track “Colliding”. The light, soft and clean tracks then meet their perfect counterbalance with a few other songs with a more thick, dark and rough appearance like the highly dancable and very cryptic and complex “Real Life” and “Superset”.

When I praised Wrangler’s debut album “LA Spark” back in 2014, I stressed the fact that this might not be a style of music for everyone but I’m completely knocked out by “White Glue” which is undoubtedly one of this year’s most elaborate, timeless and unique album releases.

Note: Earlier this summer Wrangler also released the experimental remix album “Sparked: Modular Remix Project” where, among others, Daniel Miller, Chris Carter and Solvent delivers remixes on some tracks from the debut album. Well worth checking out for all fans of modular synthesizers!

Löper linan ut och knyter ihop säcken

Jag ska vara ärlig på en gång: Jag hade inte förväntat mig mycket utav Grendel och deras nya album “Timewave Zero”, men oj, så fel man kan ha!

Holländska JD Tucker, mer känd som VLRK, har satt staden Den Haag på synthkartan efter att han under 2000-talet började förgylla musikscenen med sitt Grendel. Bandet var ett av de första som fick mig att upptäcka hela aggrotech/harsh-EBM-musiken i och med maxi-singeln “End of Ages” från 2002 där titelspåret fortfarande, i all sin enkelhet, är lysande (och Arzt & Pfusch remix ännu bättre). Tre år senare släpptes EP’n “Soilbleed” som gav Grendel ännu högre status i mina ögon. På den första versionen av EP’n finns även den bästa covern av “Zombienation” som någonsin gjorts, tyvärr togs den dock bort på andraupplagan “Soilbleed Redux” på grund av upphovsrättsproblem.

Men det var inte förrän 2007 som holländarna slog igenom på bred front i och med “Harsh Generation”. Sällan har jag sett vildare dansgolv än när “Hate This” och “Dirty” spelades på Tech Noir i Stockholm samma år. Bandet började även turnera runt Europa och besökte bland annat Sverige samma sommar där de spelade på Re:Publik i Stockholm.

Grendel har sen dess släppt EP’n “Chemicals + Circuitry” som tog bandet i en ny riktning där den harsh-EBM man levererat tidigare hade avtagit och de distade vokalerna hade försvunnit. “Timewave Zero” tar bandet tillbaka till där allt började samtidigt som medlemmarna VLRK, M4RC och S42H är i bättre form än någonsin.

På det nya albumet har man tagit det bästa man skapat de senaste tio åren och presenterar en buffé omöjlig att motstå. Redan på “Conflict Instigation” hörs fragment av “Shortwired” blandat med “New Flesh” medan ett av plattans bästa spår – titelspåret “Timewave Zero” doftar av de tidigare släppen “Interrogation Leash” och “Soilbleed V.3”. Soundet är inte lika rått som 2002 men heller inte lika softat som 2007. Grendel har skött sin vårstädning och från första sekund till sista remix är det genomarbetat och snyggt. Man visar också prov på en lugnare sida i och med “Deep Waters”, ett spår som skulle kunna få varenda synthpopare att nicka gillande med pandan och mynna ut i allsång. “Neon City Nights” får ses som plattans experiment och även som det svagaste kortet där det trots skönt sound blir lite för blipbloppigt i bryggorna. Men det är lätt förlåtet när den nya versionen av “Chemicals & Circuitry” visar var skåpet ska stå direkt därefter.

På remixsidan hörs branschkändisar som Aesthetic Perfection, Modulate, DYM och Siva Six. Framför allt remixerna av “Conflict Instigation” och “Timewave Zero” är värda att kolla upp men även helhetsmässigt är det ett högklassigt dagsverke.

Det som om möjligt saknas på albumet  är den riktiga farten. Man presenterar inte ett enda dåligt spår, men det känns lite som att Grendel har ännu mer att ge. Men efter ett par genomlyssningar så inser man att det kanske inte gör något. “Timewave Zero” är riktigt, riktigt bra och i mina ögon en storartad och mycket positiv överraskning.

Grendel har löpt linan ut, har knutit ihop säcken och det jävligt tajt.

Goes all the way around and ties the knot damn tight

I’ll be honest straight away: I didn’t have high expectations of Grendel’s new album “Timewave Zero”, but oh, how wrong could you be!?

Dutchman JD Tucker alias VLRK, has put the city Den Haag on the electronic map when he during the 2000’s began to glorify the music scene with Grendel. The band was one of the first to make me discover the entire aggrotech / harsh-EBM music scene with the maxi single “End of Ages” in 2002. The title track is still, in all its simplicity, brilliant (and in the Arzt & Pfusch remix even better). Three years later, the EP “Soilbleed” came out and gave Grendel an even higher status in my point of view. On the first version of the EP, there’s also the best “Zombienation” cover ever made, unfortunately it was removed on the second edition “Soilbleed Redux” due to copyright issues.

But it was not until 2007 that the Dutchman hit the bigger stage with “Harsh Generation”. Rarely have I whitnessed a dance floor going more crazy than when “Hate This” and “Dirty” was played at Tech Noir in Stockholm that year. The band also began to tour around Europe and visited Sweden, for example, the same summer where they played at Re:Publik in Stockholm.

Grendel has since released the EP “Chemicals + Circuitry” which took the band in a new direction where the harsh EBM from before diminished and the distant vowels had disappeared. “Timewave Zero” takes the band back to where everything began and members VLRK, M4RC and S42H are in better shape than ever.

On the new album, they’ve made the best of the past ten years and presents a buffet impossible to resist. Already on “Conflict Instigation” fragments of “Shortwired” are mixed with “New Flesh”, while one of the songs tracks on the album – the title track “Timewave Zero” shows sparks of the fragrance of the previous “Interrogation Leash” and “Soilbleed V.3” releases. The sound is not as raw as it was back in 2002, but at the same time not as soft as in 2007. Grendel has been doing his springtime cleanup, and from the first second to the last remix it’s well done and neat. A slower and calmer side is also displayed on “Deep Waters”, a track that would get every synthpoper on their feet singing. “Neon City Nights” could be looked upon as the album’s experimental side of things and it’s also the weakest track and dispite its nice arrangement it becomes a bit of a whistle in the jetty. But this passes along quickly and easily forgiven when the new version of “Chemicals & Circuitry” puts things were they belong immediately thereafter.

Regarding the bonus remixes industrial celebrities like Aesthetic Perfection, Modulate, DYM and Siva Six have contributed. In particular, the “Conflict Instigation” and “Timewave Zero” remixes are worth checking out, but they’re all great works.

What’s missing from the album is the real move. Not a single bad track is included, but it feels a bit like Grendel has even more to give. But after a few listens, you realize that it may not affect things at all. “Timewave Zero” is a really, really good album and in my eyes a great and very positive surprise.
Grendel has gone all the way and has tied up the knot damn tight.
