Schlagersynth från landet som uppfann schlagern

På det nya albumet Future Tense fortsätter Solitary Experiments att göra den futurepoppiga schlagersynthen som blivit deras signum. Albumet öppnar majestätiskt med fina instrumentella “A Countdown”. Den efterföljande “Every Time” är väl tänkt att vara någon slags ljus VNV Nation-upptempo men det påminner mest om E-Types EDM. Det är stolpigt och stelt. På ett dåligt vis. Men den är inte sämst, det är den vidriga balladen “Shelter”. Låten “I Am” har samma problem som “Every Time”, det är en rätt ryslig eurotechno-låt av det slag som kan vinna melodifestivaler, men den är ändå något bättre, för här får sångaren Dennis Schober faktiskt till sången. Det får han också på hyggliga “Achromatic” som har en riktigt fin refräng och den melodiösa balladen “Phoenix” som avslutar albumet.

Singeln “Crash and Burn” är också bra och Dennis Schober får här, i likhet med “Phoenix”, hjälp av en professionell överstämma som lyfter låten. Albumversionen når inte upp till SITD:s fina remix på låten, “Crash and Burn (SITD RMX)”, som fanns med på singeln. (Omvänt gällde f ö på SITD:s förra album, där Dennis Schober med sin sång räddade bästa låten “Puls:Schlag” från SITD-sångaren Carsten Jaceks brölande.)

Den fina produktion med ljusa synthmelodier och pianoljud i kombination med mjuka men feta beats borde få skava mer, men som sagt, Solitary Experiments står tryggt i en tysk schlagertradition. Undantaget som bekräftar regeln “Die Zukunft” (Framtiden) som är mest EBM på hela plattan. Future Tense saknar det förra studioalbumet Phenomenas (2013) klockrena hittar “Epiphany” och “No Salvation”.

Schlager-synth from the country that invented the schlager music

On the new album Future Tense, German act Solitary Experiments continues with their trademarked schlager-futurepop. Future Tense starts with the good instrumental song “A Countdown”. I reckon the following track, “Every Time”, should be some bright uptempo futurepop à la VNV Nation but it sounds more like E-Type or some other stiff EDM artist from the 90’ties. But “Every Time” is not the worst track, that price goes to the loathsome ballad “Shelter”. “I Am” has the same problems as “Every Time”, it is euro-techno of the worst kind. Singer Dennis Schober makes a good effort though and with a female singer it could probably win the Eurovision song contest. Schober also delivers on “Achromatic” that has a great chorus and the fine ballad “Phoenix” at the end of the album.

The single “Crash and Burn” is a hit and Schober gets great vocal upper part assistance on it. But the album version is not at good as the “Crash and Burn (SITD RMX)” on the single. (In the same manner that SITD improves “Crash and Burn”, Schober contributed to SITD‘s great track “Puls:Schlag” from the album Trauma: Ritual that would have been devastated in the hands of SITD‘s vocalist Carsten Jacek.)

The fine production with the bright and airy synth and piano melodies and the soft bass beats should be chafed towards more industrial noises in my opinion. The exception that confirms the rule is the track “Die Zukunft” (The Future), it is more EBM than any other track on the album. And yes, the German has its part in it. Future Tense is a fine album but it lacks some hits that could compete with the prior album Phenomena‘s (2013) “Epiphany” and “No Salvation”.
