Förvånande ljus för att vara Noire

VNV Nation är en vattendelare bland svenska synthare. Gubbsyntharna avskyr dem för att de inte debuterade på 80-talet medan försvararna uppskattar dem i egen rätt och för att de nästan varit ensamma om att leda nya ungdomar in i synthens dova höstlandskap under detta årtusende.

Knappt ett år efter att Mark Jackson lämnat VNV Nation släpptes Noire, VNV Nations tionde studioalbum. Så hur klarar sig Ronan Harris på egna ben? Jo, tack alldeles utmärkt! Noire gick direkt upp på fjärde plats på den tyska albumlistan (Offizielle Deutsche Carts). Albumlistan alltså, inte alternativlistan. Fast det var väl ingen som någonsin hade trott att VNV utan Jackson skulle påverkas? Noire påminner en hel del om de tre föregående skivorna Automatic (2011), Transnational (2013) och Resonance: Music For Orchestra Vol. 1 (2015). Den senare för de två klassiska styckena “Nocturne No.7” och “Guiding” och de tidigare för helheten – ett par hårda beats-låtar, några ljusare futurepoplåtar, någon ballad och något som är bra nog för att mäta sig med de bästa låtarna från de fem bästa albumen 1999 till 2009: Empires (1999), Futureperfect (2002), Matter + Form (2005), Judgement (2007) och Of Faith, Power and Glory (2009).

Namnet till trots så är Noire i likhet med Futureperfect och Matter + Form ett ganska ljust album. Det märks t ex på låtarna “Armour”, “Wonders” och “Only Satellites”, alla traditionell synthpop fast med ett textallvar sällan skådat i den genren. Ronan framför dem med stadigare och ljusare röst än på länge och vi får hoppas att den håller också under den planerade turnén som når Sverige i januari. “Lights Go Out” är albumets bodyspår på samma sätt som “Retaliate” var det på Transnational och “Control” på Automatic. Men även “Immersed” har bra tryck och en smutsig basgång som värmer svartalfsjälen. Bästa spår är inledande “A Million” – tung, minimalistisk och Total war-skarp, och VNV:s enda låt som någonsin fått en officiell egen video – “When is the Future?” samt den klassiska musiken i “Guiding”.

Surprisingly bright to be Noire

In Sweden, and the electronic music community over here, VNV Nation is a divider. Oldsters hate them, since they did not start in the 80’s. Youngsters appreciate them in their own right and hold them in high esteem since are one of only a few artists that drives new people into the gloomy autumn landscape that surrounds us now and that is the natural habitat of any dark loving goth.

Less than a year after drummer Mark Jackson left VNV Nation the new album Noire was released. It went straight to number 4 on the German album list (Offizielle Deutsche Carts) and now we are talking on the official album list, not any alternative or industrial list. But after all, nobody believed that VNV wouldn’t make it without Jackson, did they?

Noire is similar to the three previous albums Automatic (2011), Transnational (2013) and Resonance: Music For Orchestra Vol. 1 (2015). The later album for the two classical music tracks “Nocturne No.7” and “Guiding” and the two former for the totality, a few hard beat tracks, a few bright futurepop songs, one ballad and one or two tracks that are good enough to compete with the best songs from their five best albums from 1999 to 2009; Empires (1999), Futureperfect (2002), Matter + Form (2005), Judgement (2007) and Of Faith, Power and Glory (2009).

Despite the title Noire most songs are quite bright and hopeful, another similarity with Futureperfect and Matter + Form. It is clear e.g. in the tracks “Armour”, “Wonders” och “Only Satellites”, all synth pop songs but with heavy messages and that special VNV gravity. Harris performs steady and the voice is better and brighter than it has been for a long time, let us hope that it will keep steady to the tour coming up. “Lights Go Out” is the body music track on the album in the same way “Retaliate” was on Transnational and “Control” on Automatic. But “Immersed” is also very heavy with a dirty base that warms any black goblin mortal. The best tracks are the first “A Million”, heavy, minimalistic and in a mode for total war, and the futurepop song “When is the Future?” the first VNV track ever with an official video. “Guiding” is a great classical song.
