Udda men intressant downtempo-synthpop
Bakom artistnamnet Will Machine döljer sig Göteborgaren och tillika Depeche Mode-samlaren Witold Chandra och “Happy Tape” är hans debutalbum inspelat i hans lilla hemmastudio. Witold började producera elektronisk musik redan som 16-åring men det var först 2011 som inpirationen och produktiviteten exploderade.
Depeche Mode-inspirerade ballader som “Human Sacrifice” vars ljudbild påminner mycket om den som presenterades på “Playing the Angel” samsas här med kraftfulla, rytmiska och mörka berättelser som “The Man” och “Illusion”, “The Summer” och “The Road” vars neoklassiska stråkarrangemang och etniska, marschliknande rytmer på flera ställen för tankarna till band som Rome och Deine Lakaien.
Det starka “berättande” låtskrivarsättet är det som gör Will Machine mest intressant i det med avsikt genomgående låga tempot. Sånginsatsen är genomgående stark och även om det verkligen gäller att plocka russinen ur den ibland ganska sega kakan så är “Happy Tape” ett med beröm godkänt och på ett positivt sätt udda och intressant inslag den breda floran av elektronisk popmusik som sköljer över oss just nu.

Odd but interesting downtempo-synthpop
Behind the stage name Will Machine we find the Gotheburg-based Depeche Mode-collector Witold Chandra and “Happy Tape” is his debut album recorded in his tiny homestudio. Will started making electronic music allready when he was 16 but it took until 2011 until his inpiration and productivity exploded.
Depeche Mode-inspired ballads like “Human Sacrifice” whose sound is very similar to the one that was presentred on “Playing the Angel” are here intermingled with powerful, rhythmic and dark tales like “The Man”, “Illusion”, “The Summer” and “The Road”, whose neo-classical string arrangements and ethnic, march-like rhythms in several places are reminiscent of bands like Rome and Deine Lakaien.
The strong “story telling” way of writing songs is what makes Will Machine most interesting in the intentionally and consistently low tempo. The vocal quality is consistently strong, and even if it really comes to picking the raisins out of this often tough digested cake “Happy Tape” becomes an odd and interesting input in the the wide flora of electronic pop music that washes over us in this moment in time.
