Sven Friedrich i refrängstark futurepopkostym

När Sven Friedrich lanserade det elektroniska soloprojekt Solar Fake 2008 så väckte det en hel del nyfikenhet hos undertecknad. Den Dreadful Shadows– och Zeraphine-bekante sångaren och låtskrivaren har sedan 1993 levererat relativt starkt låtmaterial på flera fronter. Förhoppningarna om en mer elektroniskt inriktning infriades också med råge via projektets två första album “Broken Grid” (2008) och “Frontiers” (2010).

Det senaste albumet “Reasons to Kill” släpptes 2013 och nu återvänder Solar Fake med den fjärde fullängdaren “Another Manic Episode” efter att ha aptitretat med singeln “All the Things You Say” tidigare i år.

Framtung futurepop är verkligen en bra beskrivning av det här albumet, som till skillnad från den spretiga “Reasons to Kill” vars inriktning flörtade hejvilt med både svartrock och aggrotech, åter placerar Solar Fake på samma musikaliska grundpelare som några av genrens storheter som Assemblage 23, Neuroticfish och VNV Nation.

Även jag tycker att Solar Fake något för ofta har valt den enkla genvägen på “Another Manic Episode” så är produktion och låtmaterial övervägande bra och det är svårt att inte ryckas med när Sven med vemodig stämma levererar starka refränger i spår som exempelvis “Fake to Be Alive”, “All the Things you Say” och “Under Control”. Ovanpå dansanta rytmer och snyggt programmerade arrangemang skickar Solar Fake lyssnaren utan pardon raka vägen till dansgolvet.

“Another Manic Episode” upprepar konceptet lite väl många gånger men samtidigt som den nog inte lockar så många nya fans till Solar Fake-lägret så lär den inte göra de som redan uppskattar Sven Friedrich iklädd den här mer elektroniska kostymen besvikna den här gången heller.

Sven Friedrich in a chorus strong futurepop suit

When Sven Friedrich launched the electronic solo project Solar Fake 2008 It got me very curios. The Dreadful Shadows– and Zeraphine–  singer and songwriter has since 1993 delivered relatively strong song material on several fronts. The hopes I had for a more electronic direction was also truly fulfilled on the project’s first two albums “Broken Grid” (2008) and “Frontiers” (2010).

The latest album “Reasons to Kill” was released in 2013 and now Solar Fake returns with the fourth full-length album “Another Manic Episode” after the appetizer single “All The Things You Say” earlier this year.

Full fronted futurepop is really a good description of this album, as opposed to the sprawling “Reasons to Kill” that flirted wildly with both dark metal and aggrotech and it now puts Solar Fake’s in the same slot as some of the genre’s greats like Assemblage 23 , Neuroticfish and VNV Nation.

Even though I do think that Solar Fake too often choses the easy shortcut on “Another Manic Episode” the production and song material is predominantly good and it’s hard not to get carried away when Sven with his melancholic voice delivers strong choruses in tracks such as “Fake to Be Alive”, “All The Things You Say” and “In Control”. On top of danceable rhythms and nicely programmed arrangements Solar Fake sends the listener straight to the dance floor.

“Another Manic Episode” repeats the concept a bit too many times and even though it might not manage to sign up that many new fans to the Solar Fake camp it will definetely not dissapoint the ones that Sven has allready got once again dressed up in this more electronical suit.
