Det finns ojämnheter att åtgärda
Torul följer upp ojämna albumet “Tonight We Dream Fiercely” (2013) med ett nytt ojämnt album. Det är synd för det finns begåvning och kunnande i bandet, men genreblandandet är för omfattande och spretigt.
Låt oss börja med det mest positiva. Det nya albumet “The Measure”, den fjärde fullängdaren från slovenerna, har två riktigt fina hittar. Fjolårssingeln “All” och nya singeln “Difficult to Kill”. De är moderna danslåtar med fin underliggande melodi och påminner, båda två faktiskt, en del om Crystal Castles fina electrohit “Not in Love” (2010) med Robert Smith. Toruls låtar når inte riktigt Not in Love-nivån men nästan, de är bara, som bekant vid det här laget, lite mer ojämna. Refrängen i All tangerar Underworlds “Born Slippy” och det virilia mellanspelet i The Arks “It takes a Fool to Remain Sane”.
För att det ska vara strikt ojämnt behöver vi diskutera dalarna efter de två topparna. “Lost for You”, “The More We Are” och “Discrepancy” är långsamma och esoteriska och även om slutet på “Discrepancy”, med dess charmiga fyrverkisampling har DM-singelbaksedeskvaliteter, är fint så tvingas man konstatera en tydlig diskrepans av ojämnaste slag. Det finns även ett par ojämna mittemellan-låtar t ex inledande “Lonely Night” som delar drag med Billy Idols “White Wedding”, tyvärr får Torul aldrig till en bärande refräng i låten. Andra låten “The Balance” har mycket Dave Gahans soloprojekt över sig och Jan Jenko visar att han är en mycket bra sångare, engelskan sitter som en smäck och han är på alla sätt ytterst njutbar att lyssna till. Borut Dolenec visar att han är en habil depprockgitarrist och gitarrslingorna passar låtskrivare Torul Torulssons snabba trummor och snärtiga hi-hats mycket väl t ex på “Hearts”.
Torul är ett proffsigt band på många sätt. De framhäver själva sin bredd på deras sajt som något positivt. Där må finnas influenser från electro, dark rock och indie, men när electron är så uppenbart bäst – “Difficult to Kill”, Torulsson remix, har klassiska DM-maxisingelkvaliteter – så är det ju uppenbart den de ska satsa på. Kan man be att få en jämnare electroplatta med fyra-fem hittar av samma kaliber som All och lite färre ojämnheter och genreutflykter nästa gång, tack?

There are unevennesses to fix
Torul’s new album “The Measure” continue the development from “Tonight We Dream Fiercely” (2013). There are some dark rock and indie guitars influences and a lot of contemporary electro with fast hi-hats and great beats. The new album share the same unfortunate feature as the previous, it is very uneven. There are to many genres and result is sprawling in to many directions.
The fourth Torul album “The Measure” contains two great hits, last year’s singel “All” and the new single “Difficult to Kill”. They are both clever electro/dance hits with strong melodies. They both share simularities with Crystal Castle’s hit “Not in Love” (2010) that feature The Cure singer Robert Smith. They are close to “Not in Love”, but a little to uneven, well, you know that by now, don’t you? The chorus in “All” has parts of Underworld’s “Born Slippy” and some of the remixes are very good.
In order to be evenly uneven we have to examine the lows after the highs. “Lost for You”, “The More We Are” and “Discrepancy” are slow and esoteric. “Discrepancy” with its firework sampling in the end and the song “The Balance” sounds like something from Dave Gahan’s solo project. Jan Jenko is obviously a great singer, who else can sound like both Dave and Robert on the same album? His english sounds authentic and he has a broad variety of emotional expressions. Borut Dolenec play the dark rock riffs with delicacy and songwriter and producer Torul Torulsson creates great beats with fast hi-hats and stunning drums, especially on the two hits and on “Hearts”.
The slovenians are professionals. They like to set off their wide musical range as something positive, but I am not convinced. I believe they should highlight the electro. “Difficult to Kill”, Torulsson remix, has classic Depeche Mode maxi single qualities. Leave the 80’s join the 2010’s. Provide an even electro album with 4-5 hits with the same quality as “All” next time, please Torul. I know you can do it.
