Nyskapande electropop med doft av både soul och blues

Delayklinikens entré på vår alternativa elektroniska musikscen kan i det närmaste beskrivas som blygsam när man via en handfull tämligen anonyma släpp sakta har byggt upp förväntningarna sedan man på egen hand presenterade den första EP:n för drygt fem år sedan.

Den stockholmsbaserade trion, som består av Johan Svenson, Max Sokoleski och Mikael Fyrek, förtydligar också ännu en gång vad skivbolagsetiketten Progress Productions faktiskt handlar mycket om idag. Debutalbumet “Suddenly” tar nämligen begreppet elektronisk popmusik vidare till ytterst intressanta och nyskapande jaktmarker med injektioner av såväl 80- som 90-talets elektroniska pop liksom soul och bluesrock. Varsamt processade gitarriff vilar på en stadig elektronisk botten som andas både dåtid och nutid på samma gång med hjälp av en ytterst fantasifull mix som innehåller inslag av både analoga modularsynthar och modernare tongångar.

Efter den medryckande och gitarrdoppade introduktionen med “Soldier” presenterar man efter balladen “Ballerina” även snudd på industriell och suggestiv tyngd i mörka electronummer som  “Afraid” och “Twigs”. Smakfullt invävda bland dessa mörkare och tyngre spåren finner sedan ljuvligt glittrande atmosfärer i den dansanta “Holy” och midtempospåret “Happy Days”. Och samtidigt som “No Matter” i sin tur står för albumets kanske allra starkaste refräng så levererar det avslutande titelspåret i sin tur en av det här musikårets allra tjockaste och vackraste ljudkulisser.

Halvåret av mörker är nu över oss och något säger mig att jag kommer göra fler studiebesök på Delaykliniken för att lättare kunna hantera de kalla vindarna om jag nu inte skriver in mig på heltid rentav.

Innovative electropop with a smell of both soul and blues

Delaykliniken’s entrance on our alternative electronic music scene could almost be described as modest as they’ve quite anonymously released a handfull of singles to slowly build up the expectations since the release of their first EP a little more than five years ago.

The Stockholm-based trio, that consists of Johan Svenson, Max Sokoleski and Michael Fyrek, also clarifies once more what the label Progress Productions in fact is very much about today. The debut album “Suddenly” takes the concept of electronic pop music on to very interesting and innovative hunting grounds with injections of both 80- and 90’s electronic pop, soul and blues rock. Carefully processed guitars rests on a sturdy electronic foundation that exudes both past and present at the same time using a highly imaginative mix that contains elements of both analogue modular synths and modern sounds.

After the catchy and guitar-dipped intro “Soldier” they, after the ballad “Ballerina”, even makes a touch towards industrial and suggestive weights in darker electro numbers like “Afraid” and “Twigs”. Tastefully interwoven among these darker and heavier tracks we then find delightfully sparkling atmospheres in the danceable “Holy” and the midtempo track “Happy Days”. And while “No Matter” delivers what probably is the album’s strongest chorus the closing title track gives us one of this year’s thickest and most beautiful sound backdrops.

The dark months of the year are now upon us and something tells me that I will make more visits to Delaykliniken (The Delay Clinic) to be able to handle the cold winds more easily. If I do not chose to mak a permanent stay, that is.
