Ett statement till försvar för kitsch och fjollig pop

Gävleduon Eurotix albumdebuterade med ”Secrets” våren 2014 och har också släppt en rad EP-skivor. Nu är de tillbaka med ”Kiss Them for Me”, ännu en samling melodistarka dängor i 80-talsstil. Titelspåret är EP:ns bästa låt, en hyllning till prinsessan Diana. ”Computer Dating” rör sig i Karl Bartos-land och skivan avslutas med ”Un Chanson pour l’Eurovision” – en i det närmaste provocerande smörig dansbandslåt om schlagerfestivalen.

En tävling som frontmannen Dennis Alexis Hellström givetvis skickat in låtar till, då under namnet Bimbo Boy. Under det projektnamnet släppte han en rad gaydiscolåtar innan han slog sig ihop med Larry Forsberg och startade det mer synthpoporienterade Eurotix.

Eurotix känns som ett gaydiscokulturellt statement: det ska vara pastellfärgat snarare än svartklätt, det ska serveras paraplydrinkar hellre än halsas Jägermeister, och i deras värld är det fjolliga och kitschiga mycket coolare än det tillkämpat tuffa och farliga. De stora hjältarna heter sannolikt Erasure, Alexander Bard och Abba, inte DAF och Nitzer Ebb.

A statement of defense for kitsch and effeminate pop

The duo Eurotix, who are based in Gävle in the middle of Sweden, album debuted with “Secrets” in the spring of  2014, and has also released a series of EP’s. Now they are back with “Kiss Them for Me”, another collection of strong melodies in 80’s style. The title track is the EP’s best song, a tribute to Princess Diana. “Computer Dating” moves into Karl Bartos-land and the EP ends with “Un Chanson pour l’Eurovision” – a near provocatively buttery dancesong about the Eurovision song contest.

A competition that frontman Dennis Alexis Hellström previously submitted songs for under the name of Bimbo Boy. Under the project name, he released a series of gaydisco-tunes before he teamed up with Larry Forsberg and started the more synth-oriented Eurotix.

Eurotix feels like a gaydisco-cultural statement: it should be pastel colored rather than black dressed, it must served umbrella drinks rather than tacked Jägermeister, and their world is the last league and kitschy much cooler than it fought tough and dangerous. The great heroes are rather named Erasure, Alexander Bard and Abba, not DAF and Nitzer Ebb.

If you agree on this, you will likely appreciate Eurotix. If not, well then you simply stay in the closet and secretely listen to them.
