I uppdaterad och stilren kostym

Efter framgångarna med den Manifest-vinnande “Hardware” (2012) och remixalbumet “SFTWR” (2013) så återvänder nu Stockholmskvintetten Agent Side Grinder, som består av sångaren och frontmannen Kristoffer Grip tillsammans med Johan Lange, Henrik Sunbring, Peter Fristedt och Thobias Eidevald, med det nya albumet “Alkimia” efter att ha funnit ett nytt hem hos Progress Productions.

Redan några få takter in i den inledande “Into the Wild” så drar Kristoffer Grips mörka och vemodiga stämma oss in i Agent Side Grinders uppdaterade ljudlandskap. Ett ljudlandskap som snarare andas ett slitet (men ack så vackert) industriområde i Manchester i slutet av 70-talet än en blomstrande regnskog.

“Alkimia” presenterar Agent Side Grinder i en uppdaterad och för mig väldigt stilren kostym. Melodierna är generösare och rakare än tidigare, även om den industriella bottnen fortfarande finns där, ständigt ackompanjerade av de Joy Division-doftande gitarrslingorna.

Efter den melankoliska “For the Young” så bjuds vi på albumets industrimangel som självaste Dirk Ivens måste ha imponerats av: “Hexagon” är en härligt smattrande slagdänga som gjord för de mörka dansgolven.

Att “hitlåten” “This is Us”, som agerade aptitretare inför albumet, infinner sig först som näst sista spår understryker dessutom att den här fullängdaren är väl genomarbetad och att bandet har stort självförtroende i sitt låtskrivande.

“Alkimia” är måhända mer lättlyssnad än bandets tidigare material på gott och ont och i vissa spår påminns jag framförallt av Henric de la Cours senast album av någon anledning. Men Agent Side Grinder tappar för den sakens skull inte bort sina rötter på vägen. Få i den här genren lyckas med bedriften att presentera elektronisk musik så full av känslor och liv.

In an updated and stylish suit

Following the success of the Manifest-winning “Hardware” (2012) and the remix album “SFTWR” (2013) the Stockholm-based quintet Agent Side Grinder, with singer and frontman Kristoffer Grip along with Johan Lange, Henrik Sunbring, Peter Fristedt and Thobias Eidevald, now return with their new album “Alkimia” after finding a new home with Progress Productions.

Already a few beats into the initial “Into the Wild” Kristoffer Grip’s dark and melancholic voice pulls us into the updated soundscape of Agent Side Grinder. A soundscape that reminds more of a worn (but oh so beautiful) industrial estate in Manchester in the late 70’s than a thriving rainforest.

“Alkimia” presents Agent Side Grinder in an updated and for me very stylish suit. The melodies are generous and straighter than before, even though the industrial foundation is still there, constantly accompanied by the Joy Division-inspired guitar loops.

After the melancholic “For the Young” we’re treated with an industrial cracker that even would have impressed Dirk Ivens: “Hexagon” is wonderfully rattling and perfectly made for the dark dance floors.

The “hitsong” “This Is Us”, that acted as the appetizer before the album, then presents itself just first as the penultimate track wich also emphasizes the facts that this full length album is well worked through and that the band has a great confidence in their songwriting.

“Alkimia” is perhaps more easy-listened than the band’s previous material for better or worse and and on some of the tracks it reminds me of Henric de la Cour’s latest album for some reason. But Agent Side Grinder remains faithful to their roots on the way and few in this genre manages to present electronic music so rich of emotions and life.
