2014 års bästa album skiner som solen
Los Angeles-baserade band fortsätter att generera enastående musik i år. Efter Aesthetic Perfections och State of the Unions fina fullängdare slår The New Division till med “Toghether We Shine”. Ett fantastiskt album av samma dignitet som M83:s “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” från 2011 och Niki & The Dove:s “Instinct” från 2012.
Namnet The New Division är en kombination av Joy Division och New Order och upphovsmannen, sångaren och hitmakaren John Kunkel brukar i intervjuer ange Depeche Mode och New Order som de viktigaste inspirationskällorna. Dessa märktes kanske mer på den tidigare EP:n “The Rookie” och albumet “Shadows” från 2011, samt på hitten “Kids” från 2012 års “Night Escape” än på “Together We Shine” som är eterisk konstpop av bästa märke med rötter i 80-talets gitarrbaserade synthpop. Synthar och gitarrer leker här i harmonisk älskog från instrumentella “Intro” till avslutande “Lisbon” som är en oahoah-melodi à la Coldplay med en melodislinga Chris Martin skulle dödat för att ha kommit på själv. Det gäller för övrigt poppärlorna “Den Bosch”, “Shine”, “Honest”, “Lifted” och “Bright Morning Star” också. Falsettrefrängen på “Shine”, den drivna trumman och den inledande hookska basgången gör detta till förra årets sommarsingel i konkurrens med pop-housiga “Lifted”. Refrängen på “Bright Morning Star” är ösigt sommarnattsextatiskt, “Kunkel” visar sig lika röststark och reverbproducerat som Anthony Gonzalez i M83. Svagast är “Stockholm”, som i likhet med huvudstaden själv är lite tjatig och enkelspårig men samtidigt kompetent och njutbar, och triphop-balladen “England” med sång från Keep Shelly in Athens-sångerskan.
Till debut-EP:n “The Rookie” hade de 300 demos. Det räckte till ytterligare ett album, “Shadows”, samma år. “Together We Shine” är resultaten av två års stenhårt arbete där ett helt års skapande förstördes i en hårddiskkrasch. Denna enorma underliggande låtkatalog märks i TND-produktionen, på dess bredd, dess djup, dess höjd och den mjuka botten av böljande synthmattor och vemodiga oneliners. “Together We Shine” är 2014 års bästa skiva. Men inte f-n är det synth.
PS: Jo, det är det, på något vis. Och det är tydligare på “Together We Shine – Remixes” som släpptes i augusti. Den enhetliga ljudbilden från originalet går givetvis förlorad i remixversionen som spretar yvigare, ibland på gott men mest på ont. Även om “England – John Glenn Progressive Remix” och “Smile – The New Division Remix” nästan är lite bättre än på förlagan. Bästa “Honest”-remixen är “Controlxoxo Split Lip Mix” och finns på singeln men konstigt nog inte på remixalbumet.

The best shining album of 2014
It’s 2014 and Los Angeles continues to churn out outstanding music. After Aesthetic Perfection and State of the Union, comes The New Division with their album “Together We Shine”. A fantastic album of the same magnitude as M83’s “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” from 2011 and Niki & The Dove’s “Instinct” from 2012.
The name, The New Division, is a combination of Joy Division and New Order, and founder and singer John Kunkel has in interviews said that Depeche Mode and New Order are key influences in TND’s music – something quite obvious on TND‘s earlier albums “The Rookie” from 2011 and “Shadows” from 2012.
“Together We Shine”, however, is ethereal art-pop at it’s very best. Here, synths and guitars blend together in sweet loving harmony, from the instrumental first tune “Intro” to the final track “Lisbon”, featuring a wah-wah-melody loop that Chris Martin of Coldplay probably would have done just about anything to be the creator of. The same is probably true also for power-pop pearls “Den Bosch”, “Shine”, “Honest”, “Lifted” and “Bright Morning Star”. The main chorus in “Shine” – a beautiful falsetto from Kunkel – together with the relentless drums and a groovy Peter Hook-base makes it one of my absolute favourite summer hits of 2014, competing only with house-pop hit “Lifted” for the title ‘perfect song at a late summer night party’. The chorus on “Bright Morning Star” also makes me ecstatic; the reverb is exquisite and Kunkel’s voice is sounding every bit as powerful as Anthony Gonzalez‘ of M83. The weakest tracks on the album are “Stockholm”, which (a bit like the city itself) is a bit predictable and bland, and trip hop song “England”; a collaboration with Keep Shelly in Athens.
In preparing for the debut EP “The Rookie” from 2011, TND had a selection of 300 demo songs – enough to release a second album that year. “Together We Shine” is the result of another two years of unabating creation (with an entire year’s work destroyed in a hard drive failure) and it’s clear that access to an immense underlying catalogue of songs has enabled TND to deliver an album with amazing width, depth and height. The end result is a soft embrace of velvety synth and melancholic one-liner lyrics that makes “Together We Shine” one of the very best album of 2014. But make no mistake; this is by no means industrial or electronic music.
PS: Actually, it is. And its even more obvious on the remix album launched in August, “Together We Shine – Remixes”. The unified sound from the original is lost which makes for less musical unity, something that the album really benefits from. The best tracks are “England – John Glenn Progressive Remix” and “Smile – The New Division Remix”. You will find the best remix of “Honest” on the single, its called “Controlxoxo Split Lip Mix”.
