Oljan på den nya synthpopvågen

Ifjol ansåg jag att våra oljeägande grannar i väster hade fått till en av årets bästa skivor med “In Between the Opposite” av Spektralized.

Under 2014 har norrmännen fortsatt skämma bort oss med förstklassig synth. Giganterna Röyksopp har släppt högklassig house på “The Inevitable End” och Argh sympatisk synthpop med “Night in the City”. Och de är inte ens bäst.

För det är Electro Spectre med “Bullets and Desert Blooms”. Man slår Röyksopp med en nasal Lustans Lakejer-flämtning och ett fitthår på mållinjen. Det är sexigt, syndigt och synth när den är som bäst. “Bullets and Desert Blooms” är plattan synthare som följt Lustans Lakejer önskat att Johan Kinde skulle ha gjort för länge sen. Här finns de eleganta referenserna till skönlitteratur, sena nätter och förbjuden kärlek. I nattklubbssexiga “Love is a Criminal” sjunger Alexander Bjørneboe om sirenernas sång och postpunkpopdroppar en tainted love till åhörarna. Kriminellt bra. Electro Spectre följer Erasure i samtida dansgolvsproduktionsfinsnickeri och synthen är, som alltid, mitt i den hedonistiska kulturens levnadsglada mittfåra igen.

Electro Spectre har alltid låtit bra men materialet på “Bullets and Desert Blooms” är Morriseyvuxet och –intelligent på ett smått oemotståndligt sätt. Bäst är “As Long As It Pays”, mjukt suggestiv pumpande med ett härligt eko på ett soft flöjtljud. Det är väl första gången som flöjt funkat sen El Condor Pasa? Alexander Bjørneboe sjunger som en ung Kinde, fast på engelska, med stor bredd, djup bas, nasala flämtningar och med en personlig frasering speciellt märkbart i “Heartbeat” och “Graveyard Eyes”. Bjørneboe är en av synthens absolut bästa sångare just nu och för vidare en stolt norsk sångartradition inom genren sen Morten Harket. Heie Norge!

The oil on the new nightclub synth pop wave

Last year I found “In Between the Opposite” by Spektralized from Sweden’s oil-owning neigherbours to be one of the best albums of the year.

During 2014 the Norwegians has continued to spoil us with first class synth music. The gigants Röyksopp provided honourable house on the “The Inevitable End” and Argh sympathetic synth pop on “Night in the City”. But neither of them produced the best album of 2014.

Because the best album from Norway 2014 was “Bullets and Desert Blooms” by Electro Spectre. They beat Röyksopp with a faint male sexy sight or perhaps a cunt hair on the finish line. It’s a sexy synth album, full of mortal sins. The lyrics contains intellectual references to literature, pop music and forbidden fruits. In the club hit “Love is a Criminal” they explore tainted love. Electro Spectre team up with Erasure’s dancefloor exhibitions on “The Violet Flame” and add some of Jean Genet’s criminal genious to their flavour. In 2014 was synth music once again the obvious hedonistic center of the nightclub’s dancefloors.

Electro Spectre has always sounded good but the materials on “Bullets and Desert Blooms” are stronger than ever and some lyrics has Morrissey qualities. The best song on the album is “As Long As It Pays” with a soft flute sound with a great reverb. Could it be the best (and only?) flute sound carried hit since El Condor Pasa? Vocalist Alexander Bjørneboe continues the Norwegian male pop singer tradition from a-ha’s Morten Hakert with eloquence. He has great dephts, deep bass and nasal gasps not far from Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet. Listen to “Heartbeat” and “Graveyard Eyes” and enjoy one of the best synth pop singers out there right now. Go Norway!
