Ojämn och spretig bodypop från Ruhrområdet

Tyska All the Ashes – den Essen-stationerade trion med Carsten Rehmann, Marcel Flegel och Joachim Schreiber som gjorde sin albumdebut med “Gottesteilchen” 2011 – är nu tillbaka med uppföljaren “Silence”.

I en jämn balans mellan synthpop och body rullar man här upp tretton spår ovanpå en relativt välbekant tysk ljudmatta som är lätt att känna igen från debutalbumet. Och även om All the Ashes nu begett sig iväg mot något melodiösare jaktmarker så är det relativt välbekanta arrangemang som levereras här.

Det starka inhemska arvet, där band som And One var tidiga med att presentera konceptet bodypop i slutet av nittiotalet, är relativt djupt rotat i hur All the Ashes låter. “Silence” är långt ifrån genomusel, men höjdpunkterna är tyvärr relativt få och det är först framåt slutet som All the Ashes får till det något sånär.

Den And One-doftande “Midnight” griper hyfsat bra tag och instrumentalspåret “Chronostasis” är också ganska småtrevligt örongodis. Dessa, tillsammans med de bodypoppiga “I’ll Follow” och “Kommando Liebe” där det sistnämnda är ett av albumets starkare spår, är annars de enda spåren som lyfter ett i övrigt  ganska spretigt och mediokert album.

Uneven and sprawling bodypop from the Ruhr-area

German All the Ashes – the Essen-based trio with Carsten Rehmann, Marcel Flegel and Joachim Schreiber who made their album debut with “Gottesteilchen” 2011 – is now back with the follow-up “Silence”.

In an even balance between synthpop and body they roll up thirteen tracks on top of a relatively well-known German sound carpet that is easy to recognize from their debut album. And even though All the Ashes now have entered somehow more of the more melodic hunting grounds the arrangements delivered on here are quite familiar. 

The strong indigenous heritage, where bands like And One was early to introduce the concept bodypop in the late nineties, is fairly deeply rooted in the way All the Ashes sounds. “Silence” is far from lousy, but the highlights are unfortunately relatively few and it is only towards the end of the album were All the Ashes really hit spot on.

The And One-scented “Midnight” is quite catchy, and the instrumental track “Chronostasis” is also quite neat ear candy. These two, along with the “bodypoppy” “I’ll Follow” and “Kommando Liebe” where the latter is one of the album’s stronger tracks, are otherwise the only slots that lifts an otherwise quite sprawling and mediocre album.
