Erasure-doftande svensk synthpop
Efter att ha aptitretat med EP:n “Land of Forever”, som släpptes i somras, är nu göteborgsbaserade Vogon Poetry redo att introducera oss till deras debutalbum “Don’t Panic”.
Varsamt framfört ovanpå ett behagligt lager av analoga synthar levererar Vogon Poetry åttiotalsklingande synthpop, där det är tydligt att melodier och harmonier är huvudfokus. Man lånar tämligen ursinningslöst från sina elektroniska åttiotalshjältar och band som Erasure skulle sannolikt le brett om de fick höra detta.
Men trots de ibland lite överdrivna klyschorna är det här debutalbumet ändå mycket mer intressant än den föregående, enligt mitt tycke, relativt sömniga (men fullt godkända) EP:n “Land of Forever”. Några av den EP:ns spår finns inkluderade även här – men de hör definitivt inte till de bästa låtarna. Materialet håller en hyfsad god variation och även om Vogon Poetry fortfarande åker berg-och-dalbana hejvilt mellan smarta och snygga arrangemang och rena bottennapp är “Don’t Panic” i sin helhet en med beröm godkänt historia.
Andraspåret “The Diceman” tillsammans med den trallvänliga “A Fine Day” och den lite kantigare och råare “Destiny (A Version)” är mina personliga favoriter på det här debutalbumet, som trots sina brister ändå väcker tillräckligt mycket nyfikenhet till att vilja följa den här trions vidareutveckling.

Swedish synthpop with a smell of Erasure
After the apitizing EP “Land of Forever”, that was released last summer, Gothenburg-based Vogon Poetry are now ready to introduce us to their debut album “Don’t Panic”.
Carefully rendered on top of a comfortable layer of analogue synths Vogon Petry delivers eighties-sounding synthpop and made clear that the main focus are on the melodies and harmonies. The band borrows quite rabidly from their electronic-eighties-heroes and bands like Erasure would probably put on a big smile if got to hear this.
But despite the sometimes a bit exaggerated clichés, this debut album is still much more interesting than it’s previous, in my opinion, relatively sleepy (but fully approved) EP “Land of Forever”. Some of the EP’s tracks are also included here – but they are definitely not among the better songs. The material contains a decent amount of variety and although Vogon Poetry still go on a massive roller-coaster-ride between smart and beautiful arrangements and quite awful songs “Don’t Panic” is full with praise all in all.
The second track “The Diceman” and the catchy “A Fine Day” aswell as the slightly rougher “Destiny (A Version)” are my personal favorites on this debut album, which despite its flaws still arouses enough curiosity for me to want to follow this trio’s further development.
