I melankolins tecken

Någonstans i mitten av den breda floran av tyska synthpopakter finner vi Michael Pohls musikprojekt Wave in Head som plockades upp av amerikanen Todd Durants syntpopinriktade och idag mycket välrenomerade skivbolag A Different Drum inför albumdebuten med “Time to Speak” (2001).

“Im Augenblick” är den femte fullängdaren från Wave in Head och är (utöver remixalbumet “Remixed” från 2012) det första livstecknet sedan “The Voice in Me” som släpptes för fyra år sedan (2010).

Tempot på “Im Augenblick” är inte lika taktfast dansant som på några av de tidigare albumen. Tyngdpunkten den här gången har istället placerats på starka, melankoliska och vackra midtempospår där Michael ovanpå en sprudlande botten av analoga synthar levererar sina känslosamma historier.

Låtarna framförs (liksom på tidigare album) både på engelska och frontmannens tyska modersmål. Och även om han lyckas väldigt bra på exempelvis den härligt mörka och medryckande “From the Dark Side of Your Eyes”, så är det i de tyskspråkiga känslosamma och lite lugnare låtarna som albumet presenterar sina absolut starkaste kort. Det är också på tyska som Michael (av naturliga skäl) verkar känna en större trygghet i sin sång och levererar de allra starkaste insatserna på den här fullängdaren.

Wave in Head fick lite av ett genombrott med “For a Special Moment” (2005) men har sedan dess på ett ganska oförtjänt sätt fallit i skuggan av många andra starka band i genren. Alla som under senare år har fallit pladask för band som Zynic och gillar tysk synthpop i stil med Melotron bör definitivt utforska Wave in Heads diskografi.

“Im Augenblick” måhända är något ojämn för att förtjäna ett toppbetyg men innehåller en dryg handfull välskrivna och genomtänkta spår i melankolins tecken som den tidigare nämnda “The Dark Side of Your Eyes”,  “Ich Fall”, “Alles für mich” och de vackra balladerna “The One”, “Die zeit ist reif” och “Wertlos”.

With a trace of melancholia

Somewhere in the middle of the wide flora of german synthpop bands we find Michael Pohl’s music project Wave in Head that was picked up by the american Todd Durants’ synthpopfocused and now renowned label A Different Drum ahead of the debute album “Time to Speak” (2001).

“Im Augenblick” is the fifth full length album from Wave in Head and it is (except from the remixalbum “Remixed” from 2012) the first sign of life since “The Voice in Me” that was released four years ago (2010).

The tempo on “Im Augenblick” is not as rhythmic and danceable as on some of the previous albums. The emphasis this time around are instead put on strong, melancholic and beautiful midtempotracks on wich Michael, on top of a effervescent base of analogue synths delivers his emotional stories.

The songs are performed (as on previous albums) in both english and the frontman’s german native tongue. And even though he succeeds very well on (for example) the deliciously dark and catchy “From the Dark Side of Your Eyes” it is in the German-speaking sentimental and a bit quieter songs that this album absolutely presents it’s strongest cards. It it also in the German tongue that Michael (for obvious reasons) seems to feel more secure in his singing and delivers the strongest efforts on this full length album.

Wave in Head got a bit of a breakthough with “For a Special Moment” (2005) but has since then in a manner quite unwarranted fallen in the shadow of many other strong bands in the genre. All of you that during the latest years have fallen for bands like Zynic and enjoys German synthpop in the style of Melotron should definetely explore Wave in Head’s discography.

“Im Augenblick” is perhaps a bit too uneven to deserve a top grade but it nevertheless contains a large handful of well-written and thoughtful tracks in the more melancholic character – as the previously mentioned “The Dark Side of Your Eyes”,  “Ich Fall”, “Alles für mich” and the beautiful ballads “The One”, “Die zeit ist reif” and “Wertlos”.
