Halvt erkännande blir till ett helt konstaterande
Jag tänker inleda den här recensionen med ett halvt erkännande: EBM i allmänhet – och oldschool-EBM i synnerhet är långt ifrån min favoritgenre i den syntetiska, alternativa och elektroniska sfären jag lever och andas anno 2013.
Ett stort antal EBM-album har passerat mina trumhinnor sedan jag som tolvåring spelade Nitzer Ebb:s två första tolvor på repeat. Och även om de nyss nämnda brittiska legenderna förblir ett av mina absoluta favoritband alla kategorier, så är de arvtagare som lyckats riktigt bra för mig lätträknade.
Orange Sector är dock, i motsats till många andra av de band som härjar på festivaler som härjar på festivaler som Familientreffen och liknande varje år, just ett av de där banden som faktiskt lyckats knäcka koden och slå sig igenom myllret av dussinband.
1994, när Orange Sector var i ropet med deras andra album “Flashback”, så inkluderade jag (efter viss tvekan) nyfiken och spänd detta i den veckans postorderbeställning från legendariska Hot Stuff Records i Älmhult. Bandets debutalbum “Faith” slank med av bara farten och efter några dagars lyssning så hade jag ännu ett band att inkludera på kassett- och minidisc-blandningarna som följde mig var jag än gick.
Nu är det 2013 och den tyska trion, med Lars Timm Felker, Martin Bodewell och Rene Nowotny, som jag av någon anledning tappat lite av intresset för under 2000-talet, är tillbaka med det nya albumet “Vorwärts nach weit”.
Så väldigt mycket har egentligen inte hänt sedan spår som “Bodysmashing”, “Kalt wie stahl” och “Violent Order” gick varma i mina hörlurar under nittiotalet. Men produktionen är av givetvis (av naturliga skäl) i mångt och mycket kristallklar jämfört med hur det lät på den tiden. Det är tajtare, snyggare arrangerat och jag tycks mig ana att Orange Sector har utvecklats på många plan sedan det begav sig. Detta med bedriften att inte tappa sin identitet och den berömda “röda tråden” på vägen.
Det första som slår mig är att “Vorwärts nach weit” stundtals är ganska mörkt och atmosfäriskt och att bandet kryddat upp de monotona rytmerna och sedvanligt arga sånginsatsen, som liksom tidiare har inslag av både tyska och engelska, med en hel del nya grepp som passar perfekt i EBM-handsken anno 2013.
Ledmotivet “Vorwärts nach weit” är ett mörkt och tungt nummer, den lite långsammare “Freak” med sin trasiga ledande synthslinga och innovativa inslag av rap är ett trevligt komplement till albumets övriga spår. Och tillsammans med den härligt blippiga “Geile Zeit” och de två avslutande spåren “Tränen in der tiefe” och “Frequenzangriff” så symboliserar det ganska bra hur jag vill ha mitt Orange Sector serverat.
Bandet har under senaste tiden varit lite anonyma för mig och jag har under några av bandens senaste album saknat riktigt starka låtar bakom de snygga arrangemangen och dansanta rytmerna. “Vorwärts nach weit” innehåller förvisso fortfarande en hel bunt spår som jag gärna hoppar över och tillsammans med detta några lite fantasilösa upprepningar. Tolv spår kanske var i mesta laget och tillsammans med de fyra alternativa remixerna så blir öronen en smula trötta, men trots detta så är jag övertygad om att alla fans av oldschool-EBM kommer kunna ta till sig det mesta som levereras här.
